Hi, I am sure that acupuncture and herbs can help your mother.

Hello all. My 78-year-old mother has suffered from trigeminal

neuralgia for nearly 5 years. The drug she is taking is no longer

effective at keeping the pain at bay. Can acupuncture or other form

of TCM help in any way?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Kevin.

Acupuncture can certainly be effective for trigeminal neuralgia. The following are some general rules of thumb that help assess the odds of successful treatment but should not be taken as absolute or replace the advice of a qualified acupuncturist/health care professional: The longer a patient has had this condition, the more difficult to treat - five years is fairly long, but some people suffering longer than this have been helped with acupuncture. Age alone is not as important to outcome as is general health - if your mother is in good overall health, perhaps not taking many other medications for other health problems, this improves chances. The more constant the pain, the worse the prognosis - if your mother has times when the pain is not too bad, this is a good sign. If the pain is constant and unwavering this is not so good especially if her pain medication is becoming less effective. A positive mental attitude helps - while not the main factor, a patient with a good attitude toward the treatment helps the odds.

I would advise that you to be prepared to try a good 6-10 treatments at 2-3 times a week to give acupuncture a chance. In China, at least in the free socialized clinics, they treat daily and might do 30 or more treatments for some cases of trigeminal neuralgia. Again, your acupuncturist will be able to give you more specific advice and may have ideas different from the general ones I offer here. Good luck, this can be a devastatingly painful condition. I hope you are able to find your mother some help. - Matt Bauer

Jovie...Get Doc's tape for her for starters. After listenng to it , give him a call . Is her pain in the face and forehead? If not too close to the eyes I would think Deep Tissue Repair Oil may bring some relief . I use this for a headache .I would also use hot and cold therapy . I don't believe for a minute that there is nothing that can be done except surgery . I REJECT that ! Let us know how it goes Jovie

Herbal Remedies - trigeminal neuralgia

hi! I'm jovie

i am a new member of this group. Initially I just read all your msgs but i want to inquire the case of my mother-in-law, she lives with us and she is suffering trigeminal neuralgia. i have already done some research on the net but all they can say is that the ultimate treatment is operation on those nerves.

my mother-in-law certainly is not going to have an operation, her "tegretol" medication

thanks, mary. her pain is in her right part of the face running from chin up to the jaw and sometimes there is an "electric shock" on upper part of her mouth. but since i am new here, (i'm sorry for ignorance!) but how can i get Doc's tape and the deep tissue repair oil? by the way i forgot to mention that i am residing in the Philippines. so i am not so familiar with some herbal ingredients that most of the members are talking about.Ostrowski <Odesign1 wrote:

my mother-in-law certainly is not going to have an operation, her "tegretol" medication Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1. Natural methods can sometimes backfire. 2. I suffer from TN sometimes -- someone recommended

eating oatmeal that had been soaked in room

temperature water overnight, that oatmeal is a

nervine. Well, it helped a lot. A nettle-red

clover-lobelia tea helps too. Reading your post, I

discover I haven't had any trouble from it in almost 3

months (when I began my herbal journey). Try to be

able to get off the Tegretol, but if she's been on it

for awhile with no problems she should miss the worst

reactions (I had a nasty reaction to it). Neurontin

works pretty well, but has worse side effects.

From what I've read, the TN often recurs after

surgery. So she sure doesn't want to go that way.

I'll be praying she finds relief, and peace from

that. It is inconceivable unless you've experienced

it yourself.
