Guest guest
Dear Barbette, Namaste. Thank you for your email. Medical Background: Dupuytren's Contracture is a progressive, painless thickening and tightening of tissue beneath the skin in the palm of the hand, causing usually the fourth and fifth fingers to bend into the palm and not straighten. Dupuytren's contracture may affect any or all of the fingers. A small, painless nodule develops in the connective tissue and eventually develops into a cord-like band. Progressive contracture may result in deformity and loss of function of the hand. It is named after the famous surgeon Baron Guillaume Dupuytren, who described an operation to correct the affliction. The cause of this contracture is unknown, but minor trauma and genetic predisposition may play a role. One or both hands may be affected. The ring finger is affected most often, followed by the little, middle, and index fingers. The condition becomes more common after the age of 40, and men are affected more often than women. Risk factors are alcoholism, epilepsy, pulmonary tuberculosis, diabetes, and liver disease. Early surgical removal of the tissue in the palm of the hand will restore full use of fingers.
