Guest guest
Hello, I actually have two questions. One is a protocol specifically for strep throat. The patient had Euing's Sarcoma when she was a teenager, and though in remission thirteen years, her immune system will never be the same from bone marrow transplant, chemo and radiation. She is always sick, and now dealing with strep, her last illness was not too long agp; pneumonia. I would like to know how to specifically treat the strep, and a recomendation for maintenance on her immune system with the information I have given you. On another note, I would like to know if there is a treatment for extreme bloating just prior to menstration. The duration seems to be longer than normal pms and the woman is very uncomfortable from the situation. She does not have any other medical problems. Thank you, brightest blessings! - Nickie ============================================================== Dear Nickie, Namaste. Thank you for your email. A. Strep Throat Medical Background: Strep throat is a contagious disease caused by infection with streptococcal bacteria. Strep throat symptoms include fever, pain, redness, and swelling of the throat and tonsils. Strep throat may produce mild or severe symptoms. Although strep throat is most common in school-aged children and teens, adults may also get this disease. Strep throat is more widespread during the school year when a large number of students are present in an enclosed space, laughing, yelling, sneezing, and coughing. The bacteria are present in the nose and throat, so normal activities such as sneezing, coughing, or shaking hands can spread the infection to other people. The infection can also be acquired by touching objects such as books, tables, or other hard surfaces that were handled by an infected person. Strep throat is caused by group A streptococcal bacteria, Streptococcus pyogenes. The organisms are transmitted from one infected person to another. In the laboratory, these bacteria are grown on blood agar where they cause a clear halo around the colonies due to the damage to the red blood cells. The infection with strep bacteria causes symptoms within 1-3 days. You may develop a red throat with white patches. The tonsils are red and enlarged. There may be specks of pus present on the tonsils, or there may be a grey or white covering on the tonsils. With strep throat, people may also have trouble swallowing and may have tender, swollen lymph glands on the sides of the neck. These are other symptoms with strep throat:Headache, abdominal (lower stomach) pain, fever, general discomfort, feeling ill or uneasy, loss of appetite and nausea, muscle pain, joint stiffness, skin rash. Premenstrual Syndrome - Extreme Bloating before menstration Medical Background: Symptoms of Premenstrual syndrome: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterized by a combination of physical and psychological symptoms that occur in a cyclic pattern, appearing during the week before your menstrual period and often improving with the onset of bleeding. The symptoms can be extremely distressing and usually include irritability, anxiety or depression, diminished self-esteem, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, appetite changes, low energy, bloating, headache and breast swelling and tenderness. The types and severity of symptoms vary from one woman to another. Some have defined the term PMS as requiring that at least one psychological and one physical symptom be present monthly during the premenstrual period. Women may want to seek treatment when their symptoms are so severe that they seriously interfere with their daily activities. The list of symptoms mentioned in various sources for Premenstrual syndrome includes: Cyclical symptoms before periods 1. Mood changes - irritability, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, weeping, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, insomnia, low energy, aggression, poor coordinatio, clumsiness, lethargy, changed libido. 2. Appetite changes- sweet cravings, salty cravings, thirst. 3. Abdominal bloating, fluid retention, weight gain - from fluid retention, breast swelling, breast tenderness, hot flushes, palpitations, dizziness, headache 4. Gastrointestinal upset, bowel motion changes, constipation, frequent urination Research suggests that as many as 75%of menstruating women have some premenstrual syndrome symptoms. Of these, most have psychological symptoms including oversensitivity to events that are not so upsetting at other times, episodes of crying during the premenstrual week, irritability, tension, and moodiness. Appetite changes are also very common and approximately seventy-five percent of women report sweet or salty cravings. Some women experience hot flushes, palpitations, dizziness, and gastrointestinal upset. The majority of these symptoms are fairly mild and do not need treatment. A much smaller number, (probably three to eight percent of women) have a more severe syndrome which can be disabling. In addition to the above information, to get a full picture of the possible symptoms of this condition and its related conditions, it may be necessary to examine symptoms that may be caused by complications of Premenstrual syndrome, underlying causes of Premenstrual syndrome, associated conditions for Premenstrual syndrome, risk factors for Premenstrual syndrome, or other related conditions. The study showed that female sex hormones do not cause PMS – rather, they trigger PMS symptoms in women with a preexisting vulnerability to the disorder. The researchers currently are attempting to determine what makes some women but not others susceptible to PMS. Possibilities include genetic differences in hormone sensitivity at the cellular level, differences in history of other mood disorders, and individual differences in serotonin function. The list of possible underlying conditions mentioned in various sources as possible causes of Premenstrual syndrome includes: -Hormonal changes - the prevailing theory for the cause of PMS -Other possible causes or theories mentioned for the cause of PMS include: Poor diet, vitamin deficiencies, mineral deficiencies, poor posture, negative attitude towards menstruation. Further relevant information on causes of Premenstrual syndrome may be found in the risk factors for Premenstrual syndrome and underlying causes of Premenstrual syndrome.
