Dear Ananthan,

Namaste.

Thank you for your email.

Medical Background:

Alternate names - Carpopedal spasm; Spasms of the

hands or feet.

Spasms are contractions of the hands, thumbs, feet, or

toes that are sometimes seen with muscle cramps,

twitching, and convulsions (tetany). They can be

severe and painful. Spasms of the hands or feet may be

an important early sign of tetany, a potentially

life-threatening condition.

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder

characterized by involuntary muscles contractions

which force certain parts of the body into abnormal,

sometimes painful, movements or postures. These

dystonic movements usually are aggravated by voluntary

movement. Dystonia can affect any part of the body. It

may affect the eyes, called blepharospasms, that

result in increased blinking or inability to open the

eyelids. It can also affect the muscles of the face,

jaws, voice, neck, upper limbs and/or lower limbs. At

times these spasms occur on performing a specific task

such as writing, called writer's cramps

Writer's cramps develop with repeated hand or finger

motion, such as writing or typing. Pain usually

becomes more severe with ongoing use of the repeated

motion.

Writer's cramp may ease if the person takes frequent

breaks from the repetitive motion. Other steps that

may help are changing the motion, the hold, or the

writing or typing tool itself.

Tetany is a manifestation of an abnormality in calcium

level, which can be linked to the following:

-Lack of vitamin D

-Lessened function of the parathyroid glands

(hypoparathyroidism)

-Alkalosis in the body

-Ingestion of alkaline salts

These spasms are usually accompanied by the following

symptoms:

-Numbness, tingling, or a " pins-and-needles " feeling

-Muscle weakness

-Fatigue

-Cramping

-Twitching

-Uncontrolled, purposeless, rapid motions

The most common cause of muscle cramps is usually

sports or occupational muscle injury.

Other common causes:

-Parkinson's disease and other neuromuscular

conditions

-Hypocalcemia:Causes diffuse, recurrent, or severe

muscle cramping. Severe hypocalcemia can produce

convulsions.

-Hyperventilation -- calcium becomes temporarily

unavailable to the body during hyperventilation

-Damage to a single nerve or nerve group

(mononeuropathy) or multiple nerves (polyneuropathy)

-Multiple sclerosis

-Various medications

If vitamin D deficiency is the cause, supplemental

vitamin D should be taken under the doctor's

direction. Calcium supplements may also help.
