Guest guest
Dear Marilette, Namaste, Could you kindly let me know about a protocol for treating Wilson's disease? The patient is 14 years old and her liver is very deteriorated. Thank you so much for your service to all of us! In love and light, Maria ===================================================== Dear Maria, Namaste. Thank you for your email. Medical Background: Wilson’s disease is an inherited disorder in which excessive amounts of copper accumulate in the body. Wilson’s disease is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, which means that the affected individual must receive two copies of an abnormal gene for Wilson’s disease, one from each parent. The genetic defect in Wilson’s disease results in failure of the liver to rid the body of copper. The copper then builds up in the liver, the brain, and other organs. In Wilson’s disease, copper levels in the liver are elevated at birth and do not return to normal levels. The effects of this continued elevation in liver copper usually appear between the ages of 6-20, but most often during the teenage years. Approximately 40% of all patients with Wilson’s disease are first seen because they have symptoms of liver disease. Blood tests show an elevation in liver enzymes, but early on these may only be slightly above normal values. Symptoms may include jaundice, abdominal swelling vomiting blood and abdominal pain. Acute liver failure or fulminant hepatitis may occur in ~5% of patients. Copper also accumulates in other body organs, particularly the brain, and may result in difficulty with speech, swallowing, trembling, writing problems, an unsteady walk, and other psychiatric problems including depression, suicidal impulses, severe insomnia and loss of the ability to concentrate. Other body organs may also be affected by copper overload. Copper may accumulate in the cornea of the eye and cause a characteristic brown pigmentation, called Kayser-Fleischer rings. Hemolytic anemia, a low blood count related to damage of red blood cells, may occur in patients with Wilson’s disease with acute liver failure. Injury to the kidneys can include changes in the filtering capacity and function due to copper induced damage. Finally, severe bone disease from osteoporosis may occur prematurely in some patients with Wilson’s disease. This is a highly medically treatable disease but if untreated, Wilson’s disease results in increasing damage to the liver and brain, and premature death. No matter which medication is used, appropriate monitoring for compliance with therapy, medication side effects and dosage adjustment is necessary for all patients. Medical therapies for Wilson’s disease must be continued for life, along with pyridoxine (vitamin B6) supplements Patients with acute liver failure due to Wilson’s disease or those with advanced liver disease who do not respond to medical therapy should be considered for liver transplantation. Liver transplantation effectively cures this disease, with long term survival of ~80%. Because of the excess copper, foods that are high in copper such as shellfish, nuts, liver, chocolate, and mushrooms should be avoided. Avoidance of alcohol is also recommended.
