dear marilett,

can you please give me the correct protocol for

treatment of nodules on the vocal chords.?my friend is

a singer.

======================================================

Namaste.

Thank you for your email.

Medical Background:

Vocal nodules usually occur as a result of vocal abuse

or misuse. They usually occur bilaterally at the

point where the vocal fold receives the most contact

during speech. The development happens in three

stages: first, a reddening appears on the vocal folds

and the developing nodules appear gelatinous and wide

based compared to their height; second, there is

localized thickening and swelling on the edge of the

folds and the nodules are grayish, translucent

thickenings; and with continual voice abuse, they

reach the third stage where definite nodules are

formed which are fibrotic and callous-like growths.

The most common causes of vocal nodules are vocal

abuse and misuse. Here is a list of some examples of

these:

Vocal Abuse

-yelling and screaming

-speaking against a background of loud noise

-coughing and excessive throat clearing

-smoking

-excessive talking or singing while having an allergy

or upper respiratory infection

-excessive crying or laughing

Vocal Misuse

-speaking with hard glottal attack

-singing excessively at the lower or upper end of

one's range

-increasing vocal loudness by squeezing out the voice

at the level of the larynx

-speaking at excessive intensity levels

-cheer leading

-speaking over time at an inappropriate pitch level

-speaking or singing (such as a prolonged show

rehearsal) for excessively long periods of time

The medical treatment of vocal nodules usually begins

with voice therapy. Here the goal is to teach the

patient to avoid behaviors which might aggravate the

formation of nodules. This is usually enough to treat

the nodules. If the nodules are large or do not

respond to therapy, surgery might be recommended.

Surgery is used as a last resort because it could

potentially cause lasting damage to the vocal cords.

Even with surgical removal, the patient must still go

through voice therapy, because the nodules could

develop again.

There are several things that can be done to prevent

vocal nodules. Proper vocal technique and a healthy

lifestyle is all you need. Here is a list of some

tips to help prevent vocal nodules:

-Identify instances of vocal abuse and misuse

-Try not to use loud, effortful speaking

-Find substitutes for voice use in potentially harmful

situations

-Eliminate sources of background noise

-Reduce the overall amount of talking

-Identify good voice models and try to become one

-Be sensitive to voice changes

-Be sensitive to health factors do not smoke, avoid

second-hand smoke, avoid too much alcohol and

caffeine, watch your diet, and be aware that commonly

used drugs like antihistamines can irritate the vocal

cords.

3. Localized thorough sweeping on the front and back

4. Localized thorough sweeping on the vocal cords

alternately with LWG and LWO.

5. Energize the affected part with LB for localizing

effect.

6. Energize the affected part with LWG then with LWO.

7. Stabilize and release the projected pranic energy.

8. Repeat treatment 3 times per week.

9. Instruct the patient to avoid throat irritants

like spicy food, smoking, secondary smoking,

alcoholic drinks, caffeine, antihistamines, shouting,

talking loudly for long periods and generally over

times a day especially when experiencing stress.
