Medical Background: Stress, medication, diet, hormones and genetics are among the causes of hair loss in women. Hair loss affects at least 20% of women. Although it may afflict some teenagers and young adults, dermatologists say that women may begin seeing signs of hair loss between the ages of 40 and 55. Several factors contribute to this shedding of hair. Non-Genetic Hair Loss There are two main categories of non-genetic hair loss: anagen effluvium and telogen effluvium. Anagen effluvium is usually caused by chemotherapy or medications. Telogen effluvium is more common, and involves an increase in the number of hair follicles entering the resting stage. Some causes of telogen effluvium include: diet, physical and emotional stress, female hormones and certain types of medications. Genetic Hair Loss Female-pattern hair loss results from a genetic predisposition caused by an abnormal reaction to normal hormone levels or a normal reaction to abnormally elevated hormone levels.Alopecia Areata is another common form of genetic hair loss that usually causes patchy hair loss in spots all over the scalp.
