Dear Christina,

Namaste.

Thank you for your email.

There is direct evidence that the normal adult thymus

continues to contribute, even in older individuals, a

diverse set of new T cells to the peripheral

circulation. The thymus gland continues to release

T-cells to the immune system even if just at 10% of

its pre adolscent capacity.

Furthermore, by temporarily blocking sex hormones

researchers in Australia suggest that it may be

possible to boost the function of the thymus gland in

which vital immune cells develop. The Australian

findings indicate that drugs that suppress the

production of sex steroids and partially reverse

puberty might boost the immune systems of patients

with AIDS or those who have been given

immunosuppressive drugs.

Medical School in Melbourne reported in the

Australasian Society for Immunology, 1998.

In a related study, Richard Koup of the University of

Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and his

colleagues measured the levels of a genetic by-product

of the release of T cells by the human thymus. Koup's

team found that, as in mice, the gland continues to

function after puberty at a similarly reduced level.

They reported their findings in Nature (vol 396, p

690).
