Guest guest
Dear Trish, Namaste. Thank you for your email. Medical Background: Source- Mayo Clinic for Medical Education and Research This term means hair (tricho) pulling (tillo) frenzy (mania). People with this condition repeatedly and incessantly pull out their hair, one strand at a time, from its roots. They most often pull hair from the scalp, eyelashes or eyebrows. Trichotillomania can lead to large areas of baldness (alopecia), sometimes even complete absence of scalp hair. Trichotillomania isn't an intentional or voluntary behavior. People who have it are upset and embarrassed by it. The urge to pull hair usually accompanies a strong feeling of discomfort. The person believes that the only way to relieve this feeling is by pulling his or her hair. But this only brings temporary relief. Most people who have this disorder go to great lengths to hide the hair pulling as well as the effects of the hair pulling from others, such as by wearing wigs or makeup or avoiding social situations. They often suffer silently and don't realize this behavior may be due to a mental disorder. Depression is common in people with trichotillomania. Occasionally, people with this condition may swallow the hair they pull. This may result in a serious medical problem called gastric bezoar — more commonly known as a hairball — that may require surgical removal. Trichotillomania often begins in childhood or in the teen years but may also develop later. This condition was once thought rare. But recent studies have found it may occur in 1 percent to 2 percent of the population. In children, the problem affects an equal number of boys and girls. Overall, however, females are 5 to 10 times more likely than males to develop trichotillomania. The cause of trichotillomania isn't clear, but it can run in families. Stress also may play a role. Treatment usually involves a combination of antidepressants and counseling. Not all hair-pulling behavior is trichotillomania. Hair pulling can be part of other mental disorders or related to stress. The stress-related habit of hair pulling usually isn't as severe as in trichotillomania. Pranic Healing: Source- Pranic Psychotherapy by Master Choa Kok Sui pp. 57-59. 1. Since the patient is a young child, introduce the parents to the proper practice of the Meditation on Twin Hearts and blessing. Bless the family, child, home and school environment for a more loving and peaceful interaction. 2. Encourage the family to: express caring for each other in gentle words, set aside time to play together, hug each other more often to give the child a more loved, secure feeling. 3. Balanced healthy nutritious fresh food diet with proper amounts of fresh water and fresh air. 4. Regular salt water bath or swim in sea water during summer. 5. Avoid exposing the child to unecessary stress; negative thoughts, emotions, activities and environment.
