Dear Juanita,

Greetings.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: HEAD INJURY

" Traumatic brain injury implies injury beyond a concussion and involves

bruising and shearing of brain tissue, which disrupts normal function of

the involved pathways. Such an injury can occur directly beneath a blow

when the brain rebounds against the skull. The force of the blow can cause

the brain to impact the inner table of the opposite side of the

head. Injury can occur when the head is hurled forward and stopped

abruptly (as in striking a windshield). In this case, the brain continues

moving even though the head has stopped, slaps against the skull, and

rebounds. If the brain strikes against bony ridges on the inside of the

skull, it can cause bleeding and pooling of blood between the brain and

skull. Direct injury results when an object, such as a bullet, penetrates

the skull and injures the brain.

Chances for recovery depend on the severity of brain injury but improve

with prompt treatment. Recovery may take weeks to months. Possible

outcomes include memory loss, intellectual impairment, muscular weakness in

an arm or leg, or slurred speech. Patterns of recovery vary. The injury

may be fatal in cases of damage to the viral centers that regulate

breathing and blood flow. "
