MEDICAL INFORMATION: TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA " Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), or " Tic Douloureux " is characterized by intermittent, shooting pain in the face. It involves a malfunction of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V), which carries sensation form the face to the brain. Malfunction of the trigeminal nerve produces bouts of severe, piercing pain lasting seconds to minutes. Adults of any age can be affected by trigeminal neuralgia, but the disorder is more common in the elderly. The cause is unknown. The pain can occur spontaneously but is often set off by touching a particular spot (trigger point) or by an activity such as brushing the teeth or chewing. Repeated bursts of closely separated lightning-like flashes of excruciating pain makes it easy for doctor to diagnose. Doctors also evaluate other possible causes of facial pain, such as diseases of the jaw, teeth, or sinuses or compression of the trigeminal nerve by a tumor or aneurysm.
