Stop, observe, and act - Park your car at a safe distance behind the accident. Turn on your hazard warning lights. - If the crashed vehicle is on fire, keep clear. - Take charge of the accident scene if no one else has done so. If someone is already in charge, make yourself useful to him. 2. Immobilize crashed vehicle. - Turn off the ignition. Remove the ignition key and drop it on car floor. - Count the casualties and check their condition. - Do not smoke, and immediately put out any lighted cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. 3. Ring the police. - Send someone to a telephone to call the police. If no one else is available, do this yourself. - Give the police the location of the accident and the number and condition of the casualties. State if anyone is trapped in the vehicle. The police will notify the ambulance service and the fire brigade. 4. Warn other traffic. - Take your red warnng triangle, if available, and place it on the ground about 100 yds (90m) behind the accident scene. - Flag down any oncoming traffic. 5. Do not move casualties. - Whatever position the casualties are in, leave them there. - Do not pick out any glass from the face or body. - Clear the mouth with your index finger. - Make sure the casualty can breathe freely. Loosen tight neck clothing. 6. Start self-help treatment - See if the casualty can treat himself and show him what to do. - He can stem blood coming from an arm or leg injury by gripping the wound with his hand. - Alternatively, he can use a clean handkerchief or tissue to strem the blood. 7. Treatment priorities - Treat the casualties in the following order: a. Unconscious and not breathing b. Severey bleeding c. Unconscious but breathing. - Then search the scene in case someone has left the crashed vehicle and in wandering around in shock - or has collapsed at a distance. 8. Reassure the casualties - Cover the casualty lightly with a rug or overcoat. - Tell her the ambulance is on its way. - Tell her that any missing adult, child, or animal is being taken care of. - Do not give her anything by mouth.
