Pioneering a journey towards self-sufficiency, one step at a timeâ„¢

Let's Get Growing!

Hello all,

Happy, almost, spring!

It's certainly been a long winter, although the e-mail blasts have been sort of quiet of late. It's hardly the case here at the urban homestead! We've caught the spring fever, have you? It's wonderful to get outside and get our hands dirty, and we have loads of planting and projects that are keeping us busy from sunup to sundown.

From our latest home brewing experiment, newest critters, to what we are planting, check out what's happening at our blog Little Homestead in the City for the latest dispatches from the urban homestead. You'll find loads of helpful information and tons of photos that will help inspire you on your sustainable path.

Not only that, but we have a free, online social network for gardeners who grow on all shapes and sizes of plots. Join the homegrown revolution at FreedomGardens.org!

Here are a few things we'd like to share with you:

Best of Green

Thanks to our wonderful readers and supporters, our urban homestead/farm project has been nominated in TWO categories for TreeHugger's Best of Green!

Voting starts today and ends April 2.

VOTE NOW - once a day, as many days as you like until April 2! It's legal!

Seeds & Supplies

Lots of folks ask where we get our seeds and supplies to make this a successful urban homestead.

If you need to stock up on seeds and supplies, check out our two online stores, FreedomSeeds.org and PeddlersWagon.com From soil blocks to moon calendars to sun ovens to ollas, we carry the products that are in use here at our urban homestead.

About Path to Freedom's Urban Homesteadâ„¢

Self-Reliant Living in the City

Since the mid–1980s, members of the Dervaes family have steadily worked at transforming their ordinary city lot in Pasadena into a thriving organic micro farm that supplies them with food all year round. These eco-pioneers also run a successful home business providing their surplus produce to local restaurants.

Through their adventures in growing and preserving their own food, installing a solar power system, home-brewing biodiesel for fuel, raising backyard farm animals, and learning back-to-basics skills, these modern-day pioneers have revived the old-fashioned spirit of self-reliance and resourcefulness.

Since 2001, their blog and worldwide media coverage have inspired millions to take steps towards a sustainable future and have generated the 21st century urban homestead movement.

I've been following this family for a couple years now, and just love them. Love the idea, love the things they do. Good Stuff! Wish I could do what they do. I do garden though so I've got a bit of that going on. They are very inspirational! Not sure I could ever do everything they do, but I still love reading about their adventures.
