Horses have a single chamber stomach. They only eat their food once. And are

dependand on an enlarged Cecum and the bacteria that reside in thier gut for the

breakdown of the Celulose within the plant material. Thats why if you look at

their poo it will tell you exactly what they had to eat. If you feed grain

there will be little bits of grain still in there. If they are picking up too

much sand it will show up if you mix a freshly caught poo with water. The sand

will sink to the bottom. (a good indicator that you may need to do a sand clear

of their digestive tract a little sand is ok too much sand is bad)

 

Thats why they are so sensitive to diet change. Large changes in the amount of

protien and Cellulose will cause the bacteria to adjust their populations. When

that happens in large quantities it can give the horse colic. Thats why when

and if you have to change hay suppliers or the Grass suddenly gets green in the

spring you have to be careful introducing the new plant material.

 

Sigh, 42 years of horse ownership leaves you with a wealth of knowledge that

probably shouldnt be shared too often....LOL ;]

I knew horse manure needed a long time to compost, but i didn't know it wasn't

good for home gardens. Interesting! Maybe you ought to throw pumpkin seeds in

the middle of the pile this summer and let them do their own thing, lol.

Horse manure is pretty rough stuff. Not nearly as nice as cow. Unless you

compost it for quite some time its only good enough for top dressing. Though

after having lived there for most of five years Katee made her own bandini

mountain....LOL I bet something deep underneath that will be good for growing

something....
