Guest guest
I too am a single person who doesnt consume much milk With the exception of Cream for my coffee. LOL. I am curious... and dug up on California laws. Yep Swartzenegger passed the ban in 08. Used to be AltaDena Dairy was the only one that produced a raw product. And after reading one article on the subject I see why people were going for raw milk. No wonder there is a general calcium deficiency in the US. I suspect if you raise your own you can drink your own. I have the land. But you need to milk cows twice a day. Even if you get a mini which is what I was considering. I am not a fan of goat milk but I could go there if I raised my own. The Dwarf Nigerian Goats are about half the size of a regular goat but are considered Dairy goats. Then there is that whole breeding thing once a year. I am going to do some more research on Cow shares at lunch time. deb __________ Banking Click here to find the perfect banking opportunity! http://thirdpartyoffers.netzero.net/TGL2231/c?cp=pn8aov_c0nb-x6cSdcpw5gAAJz55SQl\ su8ZlrQHVl8fXegYKAAYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAXeAAAAAA=
Guest guest
If you leave the babies on the moms and separate at night so you milk in the morning. That is how I do it and I only milk once a day and get 4 gallons from my cow, which is really good! Because they say a jersey will produce between 3 -5 gallons a day. There is a book called " The Family Cow " and another one raising the Family Cow and both are really good and lots of information. Goat milk, if processed correctly, will not taste any different than cows. When I had goats I would do the blind taste test for everyone who came to the farm and almost no one guessed correctly! It was fun! I had to let the goats go, but do enjoy my Cows! Good luck and let me know if I can be of any help! Guest guest
I use raw milk to make raw yogurt. A person on my local WAP list told me how to do it. I use raw milk and organic yogurt. Mix together 1/2 gallon raw milk and one cup organic yogurt. Pour into canning jars and cover. I put it in the dehydrator at 95 degrees for 24 hours, and voila. Yummy raw milk yogurt. :-) Yes, California has had a long battle for our raw milk rights, that is still continuing. I feel certain that one day they will get their way and find a way to get rid of raw milk forever, but until then I'll continue to get it. After that, I know where to get a cow share, but it's very expensive and far away, so I hope it doesnt come to that. :-( Cyndi perchie.girl <perchie.girl Fri, Jan 29, 2010 8:12 am [RFSL] Raw Milk and Cow Shares I too am a single person who doesnt consume much milk With the exception of Cream for my coffee. Then there is that whole breeding thing once a year. I am going to do some more research on Cow shares at lunch time. deb Hi Deb, I've done a bit of reading and research as I dream of having a goat dairy one day. As you mention, it is necessary to breed them to keep them producing. If you have some of the larger dairy goats, you could opt to crossbreed with Boar. A Boar goat is a meat goat. There is a strong market for meat goats in this country. So, you would have a way of " disposing " of the excess goats. Yes, you could sell your excess Nigerians either to others wanting their own milk or as a pet. Personally, I would not sell my goats as pets but that's a personal position. You probably would not want to keep a billy around...an unneutered billy is a very smelly and ornery animal. Find a goatherder who has a male who can service your goat. :-) Oh, and there is another source of potential income from your goat(s): wool. If you select a breed such as Icelandic which are both milkers and wool producers, you have several income streams: your own milk, selling excess milk (as animal feed of course) OR making goat cheese to sell OR making goat soap to sell, selling chevre (goat meat), and wool. Guest guest
I would only have one female for milk and could sell the babies as pets. Right now I have four one female and three wither males. All city goats raised by a navy family... in the house. Only the female has papers she has never been bred. OH I know about the smell... I would arrange for visitation with a local breeder... WRT fiber. I am kind of up in the air about that. Where I live it gets very very hot. 110 sometimes. I have been looking at hair sheep to run with my goats so they can keep the property weed free. Goats are browsers and sheep are grazers. Barbados black bellies do quite well up here. I have no pasture only desert, While there are tidbits to eat here and there I would still have to feed hay. I am a one woman operation, unless I have help I would be limited to how much I could care for to provide a good life for the animals and have a good life myself. deb " who has been to a couple of nice goat farms here " I've done a bit of reading and research as I dream of having a goat dairy one day.
