Some interesting plants for those of us who don't have a lot of space to grow our own food. Anyone have any plans for container gardening this year?

Have you ever considered growing your vegetable garden on the patio? More and more gardeners are relying on patios, porches, balconies, and decks to protect their vegetable plants from hungry deer, bask in the best sunlight, or simply handle the "overflow" from a full and beautiful garden! And why not? With today's space-saving varieties, you can create a vegetable garden that will feed the whole family all season!

Container veggies are easy to harvest and look as lovely as many flowering plants when in full fruit! Just remember that they will need much more frequent watering than garden-grown vegetables, and that they may need to be supported or staked even though the plant size is much smaller. (Big, ripe vegetables tend to be heavy!) They're also likely to look much healthier than their garden cousins, because they are subject to fewer pests. Choose your favorites today and begin designing your container vegetable patch. I wish I could but since I'm moving in June, it wouldn't make sense for me to bother this year. Just about the time stuff would start developing, I would have to abandon it. I will do some herbs in window containers that I can give to a neighbor before I leave and of course keep sprouting, but I *do* so miss having a real garden! Even though I will be living in an apartment when I get to New Mexico, I might get lucky enough to have a porch or balcony to do some container gardening. More importantly, my son and his wife will be buying a house so I can plan an entire garden for next year! Tomatoes, cukes, herbs, etc. Nikki hates doing anything outdoors so as long as I take care of it and keep it attractive as well as productive, she will be thrilled to allow me to be her full-time gardener, LOL!

Unfortunately it will most likely be on the short sida as we will be up on a mountainside in Los Alamos proper. I understand that 10 minutes straight down the mountain (probably 1/2 hour drive on switchback roads), it's 10 degrees warmer and has WAY less snow. Pretty much on par with northern states such as Michigan so at least I'm used to it, hahaha!

Oh ok! I know a lot of NM is high desert. Pretty dang cold in winter. Well at least you will still have garden space, that is awesome!

I wish I could but since I'm moving in June, it wouldn't make sense for me to bother this year. Just about the time stuff would start developing, I would have to abandon it. I will do some herbs in window containers that I can give to a neighbor before I leave and of course keep sprouting, but I *do* so miss having a real garden! Even though I will be living in an apartment when I get to New Mexico, I might get lucky enough to have a porch or balcony to do some container gardening. More importantly, my son and his wife will be buying a house so I can plan an entire garden for next year! Tomatoes, cukes, herbs, etc. Nikki hates doing anything outdoors so as long as I take care of it and keep it attractive as well as productive, she will be thrilled to allow me to be her full-time gardener, LOL!

Some interesting plants for those of us who don't have a lot of space to grow our own food. Anyone have any plans for container gardening this year?

Have you ever considered growing your vegetable garden on the patio? My house is in High desert at about 3200 feet. Yep it gets cold but not for

such a long duration. Nothing a little creativity with some Green house covers

couldnt combat.

 

Containers with little hot houses (bubble wrap around tomato cages...) on them

or veggies started indoors with a nice bright window.

 

I used to live in Roswell which is definately high desert. About two feet of

snow in the winter but i couldnt tell you anything more because we moved from

there when i was in first grade....

Oh ok! I know a lot of NM is high desert. Pretty dang cold in winter. Well at

least you will still have garden space, that is awesome!

Unfortunately it will most likely be on the short sida as we will be up on a

mountainside in Los Alamos proper. I understand that 10 minutes straight down

the mountain (probably 1/2 hour drive on switchback roads), it's 10 degrees

warmer and has WAY less snow. Pretty much on par with northern states such as

Michigan so at least I'm used to it, hahaha!
