Issue 27 — December 2009

Greetings! We've got a super crazy 3-day sale on Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil and Hemp Oil happenin'. You won't BELIEVE the pricing ~! But more on that shortly.

I've just returned from an amazing 5-day trip to the Philippines. It was packed full of adventure and meetings. I spent almost all of my time in the land of coconuts. Mindanao, is the largest and furthest south - an amazing, yet restless island in the Philippines (PH).

I attended a graduation party for 24 coconut farmers who spent 16 weeks learning about organic farming and small-scale coconut processing. Nutiva sponsored this organic training as well as planting about 35 hectares of young coconut seedlings (about 2500) at several of the farmers' lands. Nutiva's goal is to plant 100,000 coconut trees - which helps boost farmer incomes, increases the supply of coconut products, and reduces carbon from the atmosphere.

Check out below our Holiday Cookie recipe with Coconut Oil - plus the article on building hemp homes in NC with hemp fiber. Also, the anti-coconut fat police are back! Yes, the evils of coconut oil must be addressed! ; ) See the latest media on this tired, old story of demonizing healthy fats.

Sustainable Agriculture

Can Small-Scale Sustainable Farming Feed the World?

Meet the best (and only), loudest, Christian-libertarian-capitalist-environmentalist-lunatic farmer on the face of planet Earth.

Mr. Salatin's agricultural preaching has influenced food author and journalist Michael Pollan ("Omnivore's Dilemma") and earned him a prominent spot in the documentary "Food, Inc."- making waves worldwide.

Hemp

Building with hemp: Asheville, NC on the forefront of a new green technique

Well-established as a green building center, Asheville has two homes under construction - one in West Asheville and another off Town Mountain Road - that use hemp as a building material.

Coconut Attack

Group uses Junk Science to Attack the Goodness of Coconut Oil

The NY Times featured a report by the "Center for Science in the Public Interest" that stated movie popcorn is bad for you because it uses coconut oil.* Imagine that, folks!

It says that eating popcorn with coconut oil is "...like eating a pound of baby-back ribs topped with a scoop of Häagen-Dazs ice cream." What mis-information! "The Center" has a long record of making false, unproven claims against coconut oil and is a big promoter of unhealthy Omega-6 rich oils, like soy and canola oil. Nutiva CEO is sending "The Center" a letter on this issue and we'll publish their reply (or lack thereof) in the next issue.

*Note: coconut oil used in movie theaters today is "refined" coconut oil, but it is not hydrogenated. Refining serves to remove the scent of coconut in the oil.
