Washington, DC - October 16, 2008

 

On Tuesday October 13th, President of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, David Bronner along with farmers Wayne Hauge of North Dakota, Will Allen of Vermont and 3 other Hemp activists were arrested at the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) headquarters in Arlington, VA for planting industrial hemp seeds on the DEA lawn.

 

Why did they do it?

 

Industrial hemp is an environmental crop with many uses, including giving Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps it's extra smooth lather and non-drying afterfeel. The U.S. is also the largest market for hemp products in the world, and industrial hemp is farmed throughout Europe, Asia and Canada. However, not a single American farmer has the right to grow this versatile crop which is used for food, clothing, body care, paper, building materials, auto paneling and more.

The civil disobedience protest coincided with the Hemp Industries Association annual meeting in Washington, DC which also featured a lobbying day of members of Congress to support H.R. 1866, The Hemp Farming Act of 2009.

"The DEA came down from their glass tower to tell us we needed a permit to plant the hemp seeds on their lawn. Our response was clear, we are tired of waiting for their permission," says David Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. "The DEA needs to get out of the way of Americans farmers who want to grow this amazing crop."
