[thesimple_life] Go Green!

The Simple Life

A family saw a movie about global warming and decided in their little world, they would do everything they could in one year to live at peace in the world.

They made a list of what they could definitely get by without. They lived near a farmer's market, so they didn't need a car. They ate food in it's natural state, rarely cooking. They lived in an apartment with an elevator or stairs, they took the stairs. They rode bicycles to get to appointments. If they needed clothes, they went to the second hand shop, or put a request on Freecycle for other necessities. No cold cereal here – they ate oatmeal or cornmeal mush. They decided to go "no power", at least as much as possible. They turned off the TV and played games, invented games, read stories, and had great family times. Their electric bill went down, and their family togetherness when way up! They found out they really enjoyed being together. They even had extra time –20so they volunteered together.

How can your family "go green"? Brainstorm ways you might be able to save money. Do you have bicycles sitting in the garage not being used? Do you have things you can give away and do without? Maybe you can patch the play clothes, or sew a extra couple inches to the bottom of pants for kids that are shooting up like bean poles. Use your imagination! Can you eat one meal a week without cooking? Hunt for meat, which can also be a family sport and save money. Can you go one night a week without TV? Maybe you can invite another family for game night and easy cooking. Just talking with other families can get you excited. Car-pooling, canning, washing your car at home. Going to the grocery store only once a week. Finding fun, natural things to do, like hiking, picking up trash along the way!

They added benefits were that both parents lost extra weight when they used to pay to use the gym. So financially, they were able to save more, as well.

Now their year of "green" is over. They may not stay as low impact as they were, but they did get some great ideas. They don't want to give up their family time. They don't even miss the TV!

Kids have great ideas for how to save energy. Put your heads together, and see what your family can come up with. Email me with your ideas that work – thesimple_life , so I can share them here!

Simple Orange Marmalade

1 orange*

1 T water

1/2 c sugar

Cut the un-peeled orange and place into a blender or food

processor with the water. Pour mixture into a saucepan

with the sugar and boil for 15 minutes. Will keep for several weeks in the fridge.

*If a non-organic orange is used, wash peels thoroughly

before peeling.

In our culture, what these folks did was certainly admirable. There are one or two things they did what wasn't as "green" as they may have thought.

Washing your car yourself uses far more water and soap than going to a car wash. At the car wash the detergent water is recycled and the rinse stage is done with a much finer mist than most folks use themselves, so a lot less water and soap goes down the drain and into the aquafir.

As for using the bicycle for getting around, I used to do that when I lived in Manhattan. They have bike lanes along all the avenues, making it pretty safe. I used to ride to work through Times Square and felt completely safe.

Now I live in the NJ suburbs. I rode my bike to church one Sunday and was almost hit three times by drivers. The roads are crowded and narrow, considering the amount of car lanes and parking along each side of the rode, and drivers simply do not expect to see bicycles. People driving SUVs simply can not see a cyclist. I called gov't offices at the local, county and state levels and there are no plans to put in bike lanes. The woman at the local level laughed right into the phone at the suggestion!

When it comes to canning, there is still debate whether it saves money compared to buying mass produced goods. The only reason I grow my own food is to have more control over how my food is grown (types of fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) And I take the Shaker approach of growing a bit more than I need so that animals can take some, too. (They also grow a bit more for those who would otherwise go hungry if they didn't pick from their fields.)

I do like all the other ideas, though. Had I a family, I'd try to talk them in to giving it a try. Glen in NJ, USA

Hi Glen;

I've heard that, about washing your car. But many commercial car washes do waste an inordinate amount of water. I guess it depends on how you do it at home. And it's saving money to do it yourself, and gas to get there, so I am going to remain convinced it's a bit greener to do it yourself, lol.

Here in northern California, we have bike lanes everywhere. But it's still very dangerous to ride on the roads. I've done it, and I didn't like it at all. I prefer to ride offroad, and I notice a lot of people buying those motorized scooters and those mini little cars (can't think of the name of them right now) for local driving in the more congested areas. One can't be green if it means taking one's life into their hands by riding bike. I only live in walking/riding distance of one grocery store. But it's still useful ideas designed to make you think about what you can do to save gas.

Commercially canned food has a lot of health negatives that make home canning a lot more desirable. The cans they use leach into the food, no matter what they say. Glass in clean and non-reactive. And I agree about controlling the quality of the food you are canning-that is so important! And now that my freezers are full, I am forced to try to learn how to can, lol. I have such an excess of hot peppers right now, I'd like to try some different things with them. 0A
