I am totally new to gardening so you'll have to excuse my ignorance. I'm growing

broccoli and am curious what to do with the flowers that have sprouted on them.

Do I need to cut this way back down to the plant? I assumed that would take

energy from the plant forming a broccoli head. Can someone advise how to care

for this wee veg? My cilantro has gone to flower as well. Please fill me in on

how to tend veg and herbs!

Thanks in advance,

Snip or pinch off the flower leggy part of the top. I don't know about the broccoli. Mine never made it that far but It's probably too late. Bolted (gone to flower/seed because of heat. ) It's a spring plant here in MD.

Hi Lee Anne! No you are not a nitwit, lol. A lot of plants will "bolt" when the weather is hot, meaning bloom and go to seed quickly. Cilantro is notorious for that. I just pinch off any flowers that pop up.

I am not sure about your broccoli without seeing it. The flower IS what makes

the broccoli head so I am not certain what you are describing. Cabbage family

plants like cooler weather, as has already been said. If your broccoli has

" bolted " up to flower on a long stem to create seeds because of the heat, you

may want to try planting it this fall when things cool off.

Cilantro herb also creates the spice coriander. You can also let some of your

flowers mature to seeds to harvest that wonderful crop. The seeds of cilantro

herb are the spice coriander. Pinching back flowers (and leaves) to a more main

stem is harvesting and shaping the plant. You can shape the plants, pinch off

flowers and let flowers form a little later in the season too.

If your broccoli has flowers it means that you have waited too long to cut it.

The heads of the broccoli are the flowers, but you need to cut it off before it

actually makes a yellow bloom. I start by cutting the big center one that comes

on first, then smaller ones will grow in the sides. Just be sure to watch them

and cut them before they turn yellow.
