When we cobbled together the first Klean Kanteenâ„¢ prototype using things we bought at the local hardware store here in Chico, we had no idea that people's awareness of the negative health and environmental impacts of widespread plastic use would skyrocket in just a few years.

At that time, we could only hope we'd see the day when companies like REI and Target would pull polycarbonate plastic bottles from their shelves; when schools would ban the sale of plastic water bottles on campuses; and when a state governor would issue an executive order eliminating the use of state funds to buy bottled water at executive agency facilities.

In just five years, we've seen all that and more. But back in 2004, when we released the very first stainless bottle designed for personal hydration, we simply wanted to give people an alternative to plastic; a durable, recyclable bottle free of toxins, created to offer a more environmentally sustainable choice.

We founded our small, family-owned and operated company to promote three simple principals: health, sustainability and environment. We can't even begin to express how exciting it's been to see the huge shift in consciousness that's happened since then. You're a part of that.

So first, we want to say thanks. Thanks for supporting us by buying our products. Thanks for spreading the word and helping Klean Kanteenâ„¢ grow from a tiny upstart company to a leader in the stainless bottle industry.

Because of you, we've been able to partner with dozens of likeminded organizations such as the Breast Cancer Fund, The Surfrider Foundation, NatureBridge, Take Back the Tap and One Percent For the Planet — organizations working toward the same positive environmental changes we at Klean Kanteen™ wholeheartedly support.

We love hearing from you, too. You write. You call. You tell us what you think and what you want. And we love the feedback!

You've asked to hear from us as well. We'll be keeping in touch regularly, letting you know about new products, projects and events. We'll also send you stories about some of the amazing people who inspire us, plus info on staying healthy and living more sustainably.

It's been a long time coming but we're excited to finally say... Welcome to Kleanâ„¢ News!

Well, your Klean Kanteen won't last forever but if you take good care of it, it may very well last your lifetime. Here are a few tips to help keep your bottle fresh and clean over the long haul.

Your bottle (brushed stainless finish) and polypropylene caps are dishwasher safe.

To prolong the paint life of colored bottles, hand wash your bottle.

We recommend an old-fashioned cleaner: diluted vinegar or water and baking soda. Mild soap works too.

Stainless caps should not be washed in a dishwasher because water can get inside them.
