Dear Cynthia,

Dr. Bronner's is more committed than ever to positively affect social and environmental change within our sphere of influence. This is why we are now Organic and Fair Trade certified, and looking ahead we are still fighting on numerous important issues. Legalizing industrial hemp farming, protecting civil rights by ending the use of drug tests that generate false positives, and ensurin

g that body care brands stop making misleading and fraudulent organic ingredient claims, are just a few of the things Dr. Bronner's is working on. We hope you find the following articles on these topics interesting and informative.

David Bronner Speaks Up For New Hemp Farming Bill on National Television

WASHINGTON, DC - For the third time in six years, Rep. Ron=2

0Paul (R-Texas) has introduced a federal bill that, if passed into law, would remove restrictions on the cultivation of non-psychoactive industrial hemp. Dr. Bronner's fully supports this bill which would open the way for US farmers to produce the hemp oil we use in our soaps, and would bring the US into the modern era where hemp is enjoying a worldwide global renaissance.

David Bronner was recently interviewed on CNBC along with Rep. Ron Paul, speaking on behalf of hemp business.

The chief sponsors of HR 1866, "The Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2009," are Representatives Ron Paul (R-TX) and Barney Frank (D-MA). Please visit Vote Hemp to sen

d a letter to your legislators asking them support the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2009.

"It is unfortunate that the federal government has stood in the way of American farmers, including many who are struggling to make ends meet, from competing in the global industrial hemp market," said Representative Ron Paul during his introduction of the bill before the U.S. House. "Indeed, the founders of our nation, some of whom grew hemp, would surely find that federal restrictions on farmers growing a safe and profitable crop on their own land are inconsistent with the constitutional guarantee of a limited, restrained federal government. Therefore, I urge my colleagues to stand up for American farmers and co-sponsor the Industrial Hemp Farming Act"

Dr .Bronner's is currently backing a lawsuit against the Drug Enforcement Administration on behalf of two state licensed hemp farmers from North Dakota. If you are as outraged about hemp farming as we are, please consider making a donation to VoteHemp.com today to help pay for the numerous legal bills associated with this lawsuit.

Soap, Chocolate and Civil Rights

Readers of the All-One News might recall two years ago when long time Dr. Bronner's customer and punk rock musician Don Bolles was arrested due to a false positive drug test on a bottle of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. If you missed out, you can watch a video on our website about the incident.

Dr. Bronner's helped keep Don out of jail by paying his legal bills, but we didn't think that was doing enough. Sadly it turns out other innocent people across the US are going to jail for normal household items such as soap and chocolate because these drug tests used by police in the field frequently produce inaccurate results.

Recently Dr. Bronner's co-funded a report by forensics researcher and author John Kelly titled, "False Positives Equal False Justice." You can download a PDF copy of the report. The report is slowly getting the attention of policy makers and national media outlets.

Dr. Bronner's is committed to getting a ban on these faulty tests as we continue to hear about cases of innocent people going to jail. Several weeks ago, there was an excellent piece by WXYZ-TV (ABC) in Detroit which exposes these false positive drug tests.

Please check it out and then take a second and comment on the WXYZ website to help i

mprove the chances the story will be picked up nationally.

USDA Certification Standards and Enforcement Will Solve Problem of Mislabeled "Organic" Products

WASHINGTON, DC - On May 5 David Bronner delivered comments to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) meeting in support of the recommendation set forth by the NOSB's Certification, Accreditation and Compliance Committee. The comments "Solving the Problem of Mislabeled Organic Cosmetics and Personal Care Products," are available online.

All Dr. Bronner's soap and personal care products are labeled as "Made with Organic Oils" or outright as "Organic", and that labeling complies with the National Organic Program (NOP) criteria for labeling a product as such. All main cleansing and moisturizing ingredients are derived from organic agriculture, grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. By contrast, many so-called "Organic" personal care products and brands in the market today, include only organic herbal infusions for an organic veneer, but the main cleansing and moisturizing ingredients are not made from certified organic material, but rather conventional agricultural and petrochemical material.

In his submitted comments to the NOSB, David Bronner wrote, "Dr. Bronner's, working with the Organic Consumers Association and other companies dedicated to the truthful labeling of organic personal care products has been in the vanguard of efforts to prevent the deception of consumers through misleading labeling of cosmetic/personal care products using the term "Organic." Unfortunately, such misleading labeling has become a significant problem, because USDA has not made the National Organic Program standards mandatory for the labeling of personal care products...The current regulatory regime fails to protect consumers from misleading and deceptive labeling as "Organic" because compliance with the National Organic Program is voluntary," explains Bronner. "Dr. Bronner's strongly believes that the best and most effective way to protect consumers of organic20personal care products is for the USDA to re-interpret the scope of it's own authority and to make the National Organic Program (NOP) standards mandatory."

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps strongly supports the recommendation set forth by the NOSB's Certification, Accreditation and Compliance Committee (CCAC), to make the NOP standards mandatory for cosmetic/personal care products by including that class of products in relevant NOP regulations. Dr. Bronner's believes that only by making the NOP rules mandatory can consumers be adequately protected from the misleading deceptive practices currently prevalent in the marketplace.

Help Dr. Bronner's Raise Standards for 'Organic' Personal Care

September 23, 2009

Dear Cynthia,

In this issue of the ALL-ONE News we are updating and asking you to take action on behalf of organic standards for personal care. Awareness of organic misbranding in the personal care industry is growing as mainstream media coverage of this issue increases. Both human and environmental health benefit as society shifts to truly or

ganic, bio-degradable, nontoxic products. We all make a difference the more we reduce unnecessary chemicals in our lives.

We are also pleased to announce our involvement in a new campaign to make the White House a Fair Trade home - aiming to increase awareness, visibility and involvement in the Fair Trade movement. As well, our fair trade certifier, IMO, is celebrating their third year anniversary of the "Fair for Life" program that Dr. Bronner's was a pioneer brand in establishing.

National Organic Standards Board Wants to Solve Problem of Mislabeled Organic Personal Care Products

A committee of the USDA National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) wants to "Solve the Problem of Mislabeled Organic Personal Care." Their recommendation is to make sure that any use of the word "organic" on a personal care product is backed up by third-party certification to USDA standards for products that are "USDA Organic" or "Made With Organic Ingredients." The first step is to get the full NOSB to adopt the committee recommendation.

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps Applauds Progress in Raising Standards for 'Organic' Personal Care

Lawsuit Against 'Organic' Cheater Brands Moves to Next Phase

Dr. Bronner's whole-heartedly supports the final recommendation by the Certification, Accreditation, and Compliance Committee (CACC) of the USDA's National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) on Solving the Problem of Mislabeled Organic Personal Care Products set forth this week. The recommendation urges the National Organic Program (NOP) to regulate personal care products and "ensure consumers and businesses alike that the products have an unquestioned home in the USDA National Organic Program." The current regulatory approach fails to protect consumers from misleading and deceptive organic labeling of personal care because compliance with the NOP is currently voluntary, not mandatory.

President of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, David Bronner said, "Dr. Bronner's strongly believes that the best and most effective way to protect consumers of organic personal care produ

cts is for the USDA to make the NOP standards mandatory for personal care. We applaud this recommendation as a step forward in improving the current regulatory regime." The CACC will present the recently released document to the NOSB at its public meeting in early November for a vote. Dr. Bronner's full formal comments submitted to the NOSB can be found at the link below.

In related news, Whole Foods is requiring that all supposedly "natural" and "organic" personal care products in their stores test below 10 parts per million for the probable carcinogen 1,4 Dioxane. 1,4 Dioxane is produced when the petrochemical Ethylene Oxide is attached to primary cleansing and moisturizing ingredients in a process called Ethoxylation. "We're fed up with organic cheater brands who use high-foaming ethoxylated detergents in bodywashes and shampoos that produce 1,4 Dioxane contamination" says David Bronner. "Petrochemical compounds like Ethylene Oxide have no place in organic personal care ingredients. This is just one of many violations of basic organic criteria by organic cheater brands, and demonstrates why federal NOP regulation is necessary."

In July, Dr. Bronner's filed its Second Amended Complaint against numerous personal care companies that use non-organic pesticide-intensive agricultural and/or petrochemical material to make the main cleansing and moisturizing ingredients of their mislabeled 'Organic' products. That Complaint charges defendants with false advertising in violation of the federal Lanham Act, based on the fact that the labeling and marketing of their products as "Organic" is misleading and confusing consumers. Defendants had the case transferred to federal district court in San Jose, CA and moved to dismiss the case on the grounds that USDA/NOP is considering regulating personal care products even though these same defendants strongly oppose such regulation. Arguments on those motions will be held on Friday, September 25.

The entire Second Amended Complaint along with background on the case is posted online at: http://www.drbronner.com/usda_organic_body_care.html

Fair Trade the White House

This Spring, Dr. Bronner's joined a nonpartisan coalition of Fair Trade organizations, companies, and consumers, to help expand the fair trade movement by asking the First Lady, Michelle Obama to declare the White House a "Fair Trade Home."

For more than sixty years, the Fair Trade movement has striven to create social and economic opportunities for the world's poorest communities. As you know well, it is the poor who most acutely feel the effects of economic turbulence, climate change, and isolation. Fair Trade combats these issues.

The movement toward ethical and sustainable consumption has grown to include faith-based centers, college campuses, businesses and individuals. The United States is also home to eleven "Fair Trade Towns/Cities" including Media, PA, Brattleboro, VT, Milwaukee, WI, Amherst, MA, Taos, NM, Northampton, MA, San Francisco, CA, Montclair, NJ, Ballston Spa, NY, Chico, CA, and Bluffton, OH.

The campaign seeks to expand the Fair Trade movement by making the White House a "Fair Trade Home" and increasing the number of items used by the White House that have been sourced according to Fair Trade principles. By requesting that staff purchase items like food, body-care, and clothing made or sourced under Fair Trade Principles, the First Family's example would show Americans how their purchas

ing habits can help to alleviate poverty, reduce inequality, and create opportunities for people to help themselves.

As a coalition of organizations, companies and consumers supporting Fair Trade, the campaign represents 81 organizations, accounts for over $3.91 billion in annual sales and works with approximately 56,480 artisans, farmers, and producers around the world.

We invite you to join us in extending this invitation to the First Lady and to get involved in this unique effort to grow the Fair Trade movement. Please check out the Fair Trade the White House website for more information on the campaign and to add your signature to the First Lady's invitation now!

Fair For Life Celebrates Its 3rd Anniversary

Exactly three years ago, in September 2006, the Fair for Life Social and Fair Trade Program was launched by the Swiss Bio-Foundation, in cooperation with IMO. It all started with a handful of relatively small but dedicated companies and their supply chains, who set off to establish a fair trade certification program that would work independent of the traditional FLO / Transfair Fairtrade system. This new certification program created an opportunity for all serious fair trade producers and products that had not previously been eligible for fair trade certification. More information..
