Guest guest
So my DH picked up a tumbling composter at a yard sale today for $7!!! I'm so excited DH of course wants to throw every scrap of food into it, and as I was trying to explain the green vs. brown matter I realized I'm not even too sure what should and should not go in there lol. So what tips do you professional composters have for us? This is the composter he got: http://www.cleanairgardening.com/rotating-bio-orb-composter.html -- ~~~ " Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it " - Maya Angelou~~~
Guest guest
Hello there, We are pretty radical composters. I put all my " greens " and occasionally put browns, in whichever amounts I have available. My browns are any clippings, leaves and sometimes paper, such as the inside brown paper from potato bags etc. Shredding would help. We just have an open concept, penned in pile. We only have trouble when I put in oranges. Of course there are no meats or fats. But with oranges I can smell " wine " a long way off and I worry about neighbors possibly complaining. If I lived in the boonies, I would still put oranges, as they are natural and I love to smell the Mother's winery!!! There is never a stinky offensive smell, no matter how much I fill up the pile. I just fork some leaves over it and keep it going, even through the winter. Good luck and I hope you enjoy composting! Guest guest
Score! Make sure you have a shovel full of good compost, vermicompost, or soil to put in there with your greens to get your microbiological action started. You can also add washed out eggshells, but other than that, stay away from all the dairy/meat additions. Congrats! Let the rolling/composting begin! :-)Cyndi In a message dated 5/29/2009 5:20:22 P.M.
