BANG FOR THE BITE

If 10,000 Biters opt for 25 biodegradable hangers instead of plastic, nonbio ones, we'll keep the weight of 78 armoires in plastic from eventually going to landfills.

COCKTAIL FACT

After San Francisco (where 15.4% of the population identifies itself as gay, lesbian, or bisexual), the gayest cities in America are Seattle (12.9%), Atlanta (12.8%), and Minneapolis (12.5%).

Wanna "out" the plastic and wire hangers in your armoire?

The BiteDon't chuck your current ones, but as you break or lose them, orient yourself with eco-friendly hangers made from bamboo, corn, or wheat. It's the greener lifestyle option. The Benefits

A gayer (er, as in happier) Earth. Bamboo is a highly renewable plant, and options made from wheat are actually compostable. Petroleum-based plastic, on the other hand, never fully biodegrades. LGBTotally durable options. These are just as sturdy as conventional hangers (and nope, they won't degrade in your closet).

Personally SpeakingUnless we plan to use them as campfire marshmallow roasters, we take old wire hangers back to our dry cleaners - most will gladly reuse 'em.

Wanna Try?

B Green - many styles of bamboo hangers, including retro-style ones and hangers just for kids ($55-$85/25 hangers). Wheatware - biodegradable wheat-based hangers, with hooks for the slinkier items in your wardrobe - don't worry, they won't degrade with normal use ($5/5). Merrick Earthsaver - you can't get these bamboo and corn-based hangers on its website, but certain big-box stores, such as Target and Wal-Mart, carry them ($7/6 bamboo hangers; $4/5 corn-based hangers). GreenHeart Global Ditto Hangers and EcoHangers - tell your dry cleaners about these bulk recycled paper and plastic hangers for businesses.
