A BIT OF NATURE

restoring awareness of nature and our place in it

26 January 2009 ~ New Moon Greetings! I have to say, I love taking a nice hot shower in the morning. It wakes me up. I often have creative ideas. I love the feel of the warm water cascading against my skin. It is one of the earthly delights of my day. But a couple of days ago, a comment on my Green Living Q & A blog made me stop and reconsider the whole idea of taking a shower at all. The commenter made the point that all we really need to wash our bodies is a sponge bath, which needs maybe a gallon of water. I do have a low-flow showerhead that uses only 1.6 gallons of water per minute, but still, a nice ten-minute shower is 16 gallons of water. Showers seem like such a necessity now; it's the common, modern way to clean one's body. And the latest thing is multiple showerheads! The point here for me is to question this: We shower by default because that is what is commonly available in our culture. If we eliminated the shower in our bathroom, we would probably have a difficult time selling our house. But is that use of water necessary? And what are our options? an interesting aside, I had a friend who suddenly developed severe

sewer drainage problems at her house. It coincided with her divorce

and the plumber told her it was likely because she wasn't using her

drains enough--she is a water conserver and used a low flow shower

head and took brief showers. Her ex liked long showers and likely

prevented the sewage backflow into the basement that ended up costing

her thousands....

So, if you live alone and are generally water wise, it may not be such

a bad thing to indulge occasionally. I tend to take brief showers,

but let myself have a really long one on Sunday mornings and the

occasional deep tub soak on especially cold nights.
