Pacific Standard TimeSubj: A BIT OF NATURE: Thinking Outside the Shower Debra Lynn Dadd A BIT OF NATURE restoring awareness of nature and our place in it 26 January 2009 ~ New Moon Greetings! I have to say, I love taking a nice hot shower in the morning. It wakes me up. I often have creative ideas. I love the feel of the warm water cascading against my skin. It is one of the earthly delights of my day. But a couple of days ago, a comment on my Green Living Q & A blog made me stop and reconsider the whole idea of taking a shower at all. The commenter made the point that all we really need to wash our bodies is a sponge bath, which needs maybe a gallon of water. I do have a low-flow showerhead that uses only 1.6 gallons of water per minute, but still, a nice ten-minute shower is 16 gallons of water. Showers seem like such a necessity now; it's the common, modern way to clean one's body. And the latest thing is multiple showerheads! The point here for me is to question this: We shower by default because that is what is commonly available in our culture. If we eliminated the shower in our bathroom, we would probably have a difficult time selling our house. But is that use of water necessary? And what are our options?
