Guest guest
Good timing then. :-)Many chemicals can be used to treat cut veggies and fruits. It's better to do the work yourself, and save money as well as eating unnecessary chemicals. Also, do you use a filter on your shower head? I read somewhere that the chlorine combines with organic solids and offgases in the shower, so if you are allergic to chlorine, a shower head filter might be an important investment for you. Guest guest
As a matter of fact, I did check snopes. A lot of the information IS true, and there are any number of resources available on the internet to find information on how fruits and vegetables are chemically treated. Guest guest
is it just conventional baby carrots or will the organic equivalent require that chlorine cannot be used? (we buy the organic baby carrots in bags) , " debsthyme " <debsthyme wrote: > > I have just recently joined this group in hopes of learning as much as > I can. > Today, however, I learned more than I could hope for. Guest guest
Organic does NOT automatically mean chemical free or pesticide free. The use of chemicals is more strictly controlled, but they put chemicals in those bags to preserve the freshness of the veggies. Cyndi In a message dated 11/4/2008 5:19:11 P.M. Guest guest
Isn't vegetable gardening fun? I still have many things going out in the garden, but my zone is 8b, so I have that luxury. I need to pick green beans today. I've got lettuce and spinach going like mad, and bok choy, garlic, beets, radishes, collards, tomatoes, and a few other things still going strong too. The broccoli bolted too fast while we were away, I may just give up on growing that, lol. I'm still amazed at how much food I've been able to grow. I'm so looking forward to next year already! cyndi In a message dated 11/7/2008 8:57:31 A.M. We grow alot of our veggies and I wash, and wash and wash everything I bring in the house. We live in an area that is not too cold in the winter- NC. We are trying our hand at a fall garden right now. This is an experiment this year. We are growing peas, turnips, carrots, beets, broccoli and cauliflower and believe it or not we are still getting peppers and tomatoes!! Guest guest
Our garden is pretty much done. The only thing we have left is the pumpkin which is about ready to be picked. Once we get a warm day on a day I have off I will be preparing the ground for next year. Our garden did pretty good this year. We have canned our vegitables so that we can have enough for the winter. We was also able to give some to others who needed it. Next year we will have a larger garden. Take care and God Bless. Guest guest
It is understandable to be afraid to can. Tell you the truth, I wouldn't have done it if it wasn't for my wife who helped her grandmother can growing up. Once you learn the basics though there is really nothing to worry about. I think it is our society who has put so much fear in us about doing these types of things.
