Guest guest
From another list this morning. Please don't use canola oil, it has been linked to cancer. I'd use coconut oil. Cyndi 9 cups rolled oats1/2 - 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) (I use sunflower seeds and/orcrushed almond slivers)1 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk1 1/3 cup shredded coconut1/2 cup wheat germ (optional) (Occasionally, I will also add a smallhandful of wheat bran)Mix these together and then add1 1/3 cup oil (I use canola)Mix this in and then add1 1/3 - 1 1/2 cup honeyAnd mix inThe honey won't stick to the measuring cup if you measure the oil first.Place on pizza pans or cookie sheets (with edges) and bake at 350º Funtil golden brown (about 30-35 minutes), turning every 10-15 minutes withan egg-turner.I purchase my rolled oats in 25-pound bags.I add raisins, craisins, blueberries and/or half a banana to thegranola and have a tasty breakfast every morning. Guest guest
Thanks for the recipe. We only use Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is the best oil and we use it in all our cooking. Guest guest
I see some factually incorrect info on this site which makes me question this info. I just double checked the liquid spray Spectrum brand canola oil. It doesn't contain trans fats isn't hydrogenated. I believe it is rapeseed not gmo. I'm not saying it's the best oil but for med high heat it works well. I especially like the spray because I can use just enough to keep things like eggs from sticking. I'm willing to change my mind but not based on this. Lara Quote from site below- Beware of Canola Oil, Canola Oil is an Industrial Oil, Not Fit For Human Consumption # It is genetically engineered rapeseed # It has been shown to cause lung cancer (Wall Street Journal: 6/7/95) # Generally rapeseed has a cumulative effect, taking almost 10 years before symptoms begin to manifest. It has a tendency to inhibit proper metabolism of foods and prohibits normal enzyme function. Canola is a Trans Fatty Acid, which has shown to have a direct link to cancer. These Trans Fatty acids are labeled as hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Avoid all of them! <> >cyndikrall [cyndikrall] >9/25/2008 12:19:31 AM > >Re: [RFSL] Re: Granola recipe > >Here's a good article that talks about the health risks associated with canola oil: > >http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/canola.htm > >Even the organic oil is not a healthy oil. :-( > >Cyndi > > >In a message dated 9/24/2008 8:23:05 P.M. Guest guest
The thing about olive oil is it can breakdown at higher temps into free radicals. I use refined canola, peanut, or coconut oil for higher heats. <> >The Oklahoma Tomcat [jonesfamilyhomestead] >9/24/2008 9:48:24 PM > >Re: [RFSL] Granola recipe > >Thanks for the recipe. Guest guest
There's a lot more information out there, this was just the source I took. You might want to think about doing more research for yourself and make your own decision. Mercola has some good information too, as well as others. Canola oil has been linked with cancer, specifically lung cancer. For me, it's not worth taking the risk, since I already have cancer. I do not consider canola oil a safe oil to use for any heating at all. It also contains a lot of omega-6. Everyone needs to make their own decision on what they feel is best for them. I just try to put the information out there. The information is widely available on the internet. Cyndi In a message dated 9/25/2008 4:19:20 A.M. Guest guest
I also wanted to mention the book Eat Fat, Lose Fat. It was written by someone who studied fats for many years. It's a great resource. Cyndi In a message dated 9/25/2008 4:19:20 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, larabrown writes: I see some factually incorrect info on this site which makes me question this info. Guest guest
Thanks Lara. This is why I say that we must look for known creditable websites and find lots of them that agree with each other. When I see a website that looks like just anyone could put it together then I have to find other sites from medical, science, or other established establishments that are known to have creditable information to back it up. If you don't do this then you can end up being alarmed over nothing and even spread this alarm. Does everyone know of the Dihydrogen Monoxide scare (http://www.dhmo.org/). This scare was so big and the website was so good that it caused one city in California to take action on it based just on the website ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4534017/). So, we have to also watch out what we read and hear. Don't spread panic until you have verified the information first. Remember, you can ruin your creditablity by spreading false information that you get from somewhere else.
