Guest guest
We live on an island which is at the end of the line so when the power goes out it is often out for many hours...used to be days but they did do some upgrading... it was worse in the days before we had town water because then we couldn't flush the toilet...[no pump]... I had a gas stove and gas hot water system... In this house [ we built next door] we are all electric but I keep a good supply of candles and some LED torches which are bright enough to read with......we have a small gas camping stove and a gas barbecue....we make sure the batteries in the portable radio are new and we do have a small 12 volt TV we can hook up to a spare car battery if needed but we aren't that keen on TV so we haven't done that yet.... Maureen [Australia] I would love to use less electricity, but I would never want to be without it completely. I think that's a little too isolationist for me. I like having access to the internet to see what is going on out in the world. I don't think isolationism has done anyone any good. I admit to being woefully unprepared for no electricity for any length of time, lol. This is a good reminder for me to think about these things, so thanks for bringing this up. I had asked DH to get a couple of good flashlights for us, as all of ours have disappeared. But that's only the tip of the iceberg! I wonder if there are any good lists out there of things you should have on hand for emergencies? I'm sure there should be. Cyndi
Guest guest
Hi Maureen! Is there anything you do to save your refrigerated and frozen food when your power goes out? Or has it not gone out long enough to affect your food?Cyndi In a message dated 9/9/2008 12:39:40 A.M. Guest guest
The longest the power was out was 48 hours and that was over one Christmas holiday period, so the hottest time of the year in Australia... We didn't open the freezer and the frozen food survived...fortunately the freezer was full so with not letting any cold air out or any hot air in it was still frozen when the power came back.... The stuff in the refrgerator was a different matter...but we managed to eat most of it while still fresh.. We lived on a small boat for four months once without a frige...We ate a lot of vegetarian meals...Lentils and beans don't need to be kept cold...[smile] Maureen On 11/09/2008, cyndikrall <cyndikrall wrote: Hi Maureen! Guest guest
I LOVE lentils. A leftover from my vegetarian days. I still crave them, especially in winter. So, you don't think it's worthwhile to invest in some kind of generator for power outages? I think at some point, it's a wise investment for a real emergency. Those days might be coming soon.
