Guest guest
This is turning out to be easier than we thought. Last night was our first "official" night without electric lighting. After Paula bought the oil lamps & oil we needed to have enough for 2 lamps per room, I went around unplugging lights and removing light bulbs from the ceiling fixtures. When it was getting dark enough to need the lamps, I had the idea to light 1 lamp per room and have the wick turned down low. It gave about the same amount of lighting as a night light - enough to safely walk through the room. If we were going to be in that room for a while, we simply turn up the wick to brighten the lighting & could also light the 2nd lamp if it was needed. When ready to leave the room, we put out the 2nd lamp and turn down the wick again in the other one. The kids are in bed by 7:30pm, so they don't go long without lighting. We have a set of the wall decorations that have a bowl that you place a candle into. We are going to get some more of those also to hang up in each room. These will make a good light source also. By hanging them high enough on the wall, we will be able to light them in the kids' room and not have to worry about the kids knocking them down. Of course, these will only be used while the kids are awake. When it is bedtime, the candles would be put out. We already have a set of these hanging up in the kitchen and they look really nice when lit. I also plan to mount small shelves to the walls to place the lamps onto with some type of reflective material on the wall behind them to maximize the lighting from the lamps. I am gradually getting used to the idea of getting all the work done in daylight hours. It takes a bit more prioritizing of my day, but I am getting there. Actually I am enjoying it. By the end of the day, I am pretty tired but it feels good. I will keep you all updated. Take care and God Bless. Love, The Oklahoma Tomcat ..
