Greetings, how is everyone doing? I pray that this post finds everyone in

good health and spirits. A week ago we lost power in our kitchen and

livingroom. Fortunatly, our house was built before electricity and when

power goes out, we do OK. The only thing we really need electricity for is

our fridge and dryer. Everything else is just for convienience. Well, this

weekend I was going to pick up a new fuse box (ours is way too outdated and

that is what went) and have it installed by our neighbor who knows how to

work with electricity. This morning I went into the kitchen and my wife lit

two oil lamps in the kitchen and possitioned them so that the whole kitchen

was well lit. I said, " Wow, we could go without electricity. " I should let

everyone know that my wife has always been for us living without electricity

but I like my electrical items (TV, computer, lights, ect). She was excited

to hear me say that. So, we talked and this is what we came up with. We

need the fridge, electric cook stove for the summer (we do have the wood

cook stove for the cold seasons), we want to keep the computer so we can

continue to do our businees and keep in touch with everyone, we need the

dryer for the winter and rainy days, and need the washer. We are going to

do away with lights, TV, and all other electical items not listed above for

three weeks and see how we do. If we do good, then we will rewire the house

for only the items we said we will keep. We will let you all know how we

do. Take care and God Bless.

That's cool. My hubby would never give up tv! The only thing I see a problem is if for some reason you want or need to sell the house down the road, you may not get as much for it as if it were completely rewired. I, personally would be too tempted to use electricity inefficiently if it was at my disposal.

I like to hang clothes out, but hubby prefers me to dry them. I use to use my dishwasher two and three times a day (homeschool three kids that for some reason insist on eating three times a day!). I did cut back on that. We have ac, the list goes on.

We are an electricity guzzling family, I'm sad to say.

Kuddos to you and your wife for trying it out!

It can be hard going w/out electricity. We were also an electricity guzzling family. Our electric was also above normal. To tell you the truth, if it wasn't for the fact that the power went out in our kitchen and living room and we saw we could go without, we would still be using electricity. It took that for me to see that I don't miss the TV and I can go without the lights. I am the one that thought I couldn"t go without the TV. My wife has always been for us going without electricity.

If would take a tragity for us to sell our house and if we did, it isn't worth much now anyway. Actually, it is the land that makes our house worth what it is. The remodeling we are doing (even without all the outlets and wires) will be an improvement in value. I know sad, but we do like the house.

The biggest problem I am having is remembering to not turn on the lights. I took the bulbs out of all the light sockets except the bathroom because I am remodeling in there now and need the extra light on cloudy days (which we are having lots of). When I walk into the bathroom I turn that light on and then turn it back off. My wife laughs at me when I do it. Another thing we are working on is remembering to put the matches in a place where we can find them in the early morning or when we wake up at night. We have a place for them next to the lamps, but I keep forgetting to put them back when I use them. Then I am fumbling for them when I wake up at 5am.

Well, I will go ahead and end for now. Take care and God Bless.

So are we, but in our hot climate, going without electricity/AC is just not an option. I LOVE hanging clothes out on a line, but I can't do that here. And my husband is the same as yours, he wants them dried in the dryer. It's so tough making the compromises.

It really IS a matter of retraining yourself, isn't it? I think I'd be ok without TV, but not the computer! I love to read, so I'd just do that more, but without lights, i couldn't do that at night, and I'd probably go nuts, lol.

There's a theory going around about how our natural cycle is to go to sleep when the sun goes down, and rise when the sun comes up, and the reason we have so many sleep and stress issues is because we are not following our bodies natural cycles. It would be interesting to test that theory...
