Guest guest
Please excuse the following soap box side note rant.. How can you mean what you say if you do not say what you mean!! Please lets stop libeling Cynics!!! A Cynic is an adherent of an ancient Greek school of philosophers who held the view that virtue is the only good and that its essence lies in self-control and independence. They often pointed out corruption, power mongering, and other abuse in government and society by those in control... These where the original political watch dogs. Cynical philosophy closely resembles Buddhist philosophy. Both philosophies denied that pleasure was equal to or had anything to do with true happiness. A crucial ingredient in both philosophies was the sufficiency of virtue for the attainment of happiness (enlightenment in Buddhism). Early [true] Christians where instructed by Master Jesus " carry no... knapsack, wear no sandals. Do not bring a second tunic or a staff... " It is thought to be his intention that his disciples would not be confused with the wandering Cynics -the two movements had enough in common sounding like each other!!! Jesus did not want the two types of wandering teachers to look like each other as well!!! If you mean some one seems a negative jerk say -he seems a negative jerk. breathe peace y'all -- For further reading: Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy, " Cynicism. Guest guest
Hi Brian, Very interesting post. ....didn't know all this about Cynics, etc. There's been alot of good eye-opening info here. It seems that calling someone a " negative jerk " might have derailed the informative posts, including yours. ....and not given the 'Cynics' a chance to point out the " corruption, power mongering, and >other abuse in government and society by those in >control... " I was glad and grateful to have seen every post. These issues concern us all, in every sector. Again, IMHO, Kit At 08:00 AM 11/19/02 -0800, you wrote: >Please excuse the following soap box side note rant.. >How can you mean what you say if you do not say what >you mean!! >Please lets stop libeling Cynics!!! >A Cynic is an adherent of an ancient Greek school of >philosophers who held the view that virtue is the only >good and that its essence lies in self-control and >independence. >They often pointed out corruption, power mongering, and >other abuse in government and society by those in >control... >These where the original political watch dogs. > >Cynical philosophy closely resembles Buddhist >philosophy.
