Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry When the U.S. Centers for Disease Control found unusually high levels of hormone-disrupting phthalates in women eight years ago, no one had any idea how ugly the beauty industry really was. Due largely to pressure from EWG and our supporters, DuPont, the maker of the now infamous Teflon, has promised to phase out PFOA, a cancer-causing chemical found in grease-resistant coatings for food packaging. But the chemicals DuPont will use to replace it may be no safer. Since there's virtually no public data on the health risks of the new, supposedly green chemicals, it looks like DuPont is continuing a decades-long pattern of consumer deception. With record floods pounding the Midwest, the nation's ill-conceived corn ethanol mandate is driving our economy into a perfect storm. More than 1/3 of this year's corn crop is destined for our fuel tanks. Weather-induced worries about corn shortages are pushing up food prices to record highs and doing little to lower gas prices. Instead of subsidizing an ethanol bender, America needs a real energy policy focused on higher mileage standards, conservation, and clean energy solutions like solar and wind. Read our report. Enviroblog: New Shower Curtain Smell is Gross It may not be news to regular Enviroblog readers, but it's official: new shower curtain smell is caused by toxic chemicals. A study commissioned by the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice looked at the chemical composition of PVC shower curtains bought at a variety of retailers (from Sears to Bed Bath Beyond). They found, unsurprisingly, that shower curtains contain high levels of phthalates. They also found high levels of organotins, and the single shower curtain tested for off-gassing released 108 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Click to continue reading.
