" There are those of us who are always about to live. We are waiting until things change, until there is more time, until we are less tired, until we get a promotion, until we settle down -- until, until, until. It always seems as if there is some major event that must occur in our lives before we begin living. " -- George Sheehan

Study Indicates Diabetics Shouldn't Forget Their Antioxidants

Vitamins C and E supplements may reduce memory loss in type-2 diabetics, a population at risk of increased impaired memory, suggests a new study from Canada. Daily doses of 1000 mg of vitamin C and 800 IU of vitamin E improved mental function after carbohydrate-rich meals and may protect against memory loss, according to a small study with 16 diabetics published in the journal Nutrition Research.

Don't Be Afraid of the Sun - It Could Help Save Your Life

As summer comes and people across America get ready to start slathering on the sunscreen, a note of caution is in order – a little sunshine is good for you. Studies increasingly are suggesting the value of vitamin D – often known as the sunshine vitamin, because that's one way you can obtain it – in everything from bone metabolism to maintaining muscle strength, immune function, reducing hypertension and possibly even playing a role in prevention of cancer and autoimmune disease. For those days when you will be out in the sun for long periods of time, I recommend UV Natural Sunscreen.

Omega-3 Linked To Healthy Eyes

A high intake of omega-3 fatty acids and fish may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by up to 38 per cent, suggests a new meta-analysis. Pooling the data from nine studies, researchers from the University of Melbourne in Australia report that the benefits were most pronounced against late (more advanced) AMD, while eating fish twice a week was associated with a reduced risk of both early and late AMD. The meta-analysis, which included 88,974 participants and 3,203 people with AMD, is published in the June issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.

Bastyr University's St. John's Wort Article in JAMA: CAM Research Breakthrough Or Big Pharma Sell Out?

The biggest health story in the United States media during the second week of June 2008 involved a major study published June 11, 2008 in the Journal of the American Medical Association - JAMA - one of the most prestigious mainstream medical journals in the world. The study was the subject of hundreds of print articles, television and radio broadcast reports, and Internet items. The title of the Washington Post's article published June 11, 2008 was typical: " St. John's Wort Doesn't Work for ADHD. "

Read article by Peter Barry Chowka

Comment: It is notable that one of the co-authors of this study was Dr. Joseph Biederman, a Harvard child psychiatrist who reportedly earned at least $1.6 million in consulting fees from numerous drug companies from 2000 to 2007 but did not report much of this income to university officials. As Peter Barry Chowka's article describes, this laundry list of Big Pharma financial affiliations by a principal author of an herbal nutritional supplement study should raise major alarms by itself.

AAP Leadership Fights Informed Vaccine Choices

In another fit of pique aimed at the growing number of vaccine-educated parents questioning pediatricians about the safety of vaccines, the largest private medical organization representing medical doctors treating children - the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) - recently announced to its membership that it will fight doubting parents in their offices, in the media, on the internet and through a partnership with other wealthy and powerful organizations funded by a pharmaceutical industry committed to doing the same thing. Hang on to your child because the doctor you have trusted with your child's life might just try to make you out to be a bad parent and not only throw you out of the office but notify state officials to charge you with child medical abuse if you don't agree to give your child every one of those 69 doses of 16 vaccines that doctors working for the Centers for Disease Control say all children from birth to age 18 must get.

Be prepared that the doctor, who you pay to keep your child well, may dutifully obey recent orders given by the AAP leadership to implement one-size- fits-all government vaccine policies: no questions asked. The next time you visit your pediatrician and attempt to ask a question about vaccine reactions or suggest your child get fewer or no vaccines (especially if your child has already suffered serious vaccine reactions your doctor refuses to recognize) be prepared to be humiliated, harassed, threatened and thrown out of the office.

Study Indicates that Flavonols Slash The Rist of Colon Cancer

An increased intake of antioxidant flavonols from tea, onions, beans, and apples may slash the risk of colorectal cancer by a whopping 76 per cent, suggests a new US study. Analysis of data from a randomised dietary intervention trial showed that the overall class of flavonoid compounds was not associated with a risk reduction, but flavonols - a sub-group of flavonoids, did significantly reduce risk, according to findings published in this month's Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention. The study adds to a growing body of science linking increased consumption of flavonol-rich foods, such as fruit and vegetables, to risk reductions for a range of cancers, including lung, pancreatic, and breast cancer.

Osteoporosis Drugs Found to Cause Severe Pain

The FDA has issued a new warning that a popular class of osteoporosis drugs may lead to severe, chronic and even permanent pain in muscles, joints and bones. The agency has known of this risk from the drug class known as bisphosphonates since their approval, and prescribing instructions for doctors warn of the possibility of severe pain. But according to the FDA, many doctors do not appear to be aware that the drugs may be linked to severe pain in their patients.

The bisphosphonate drug family includes Merck's Fosamax; Roche and Glaxo SmithKline's Boniva; Novartis' Aredia, Zometa and Reclast (marketed as Aclasta outside the United States); Procter & Gamble's Didronel; Sanofi-Aventis' Skelid; and Actonel, sold by Procter & Gamble and Sanofi-Aventis.

Stop the Dripping

There are currently 400 million people worldwide facing severe water shortages, according to the United Nations. By 2050, that number will be 4 billion, yet the pain is already being felt around the country. In California, Governor Schwarzenegger has declared the first statewide drought in 17 years. Meanwhile, residents in some areas of Georgia were only recently relieved from a moratorium on car-washing and running sprinklers, while most of northeast Georgia still faces what officials are calling " extreme drought. " All the while, an enormous amount of water is lost through seemingly minor drips around the house. A leaky faucet can lose up to 20 gallons of water a day, while a leaky toilet can flush an extra 200 gallons every day! What's worse, the toilet could be leaking and you might not even know it! To test for a leak, put five to ten drops of food coloring in the tank. If ten minutes later there's coloring in the bowl, you've got a problem.

Bacteria In Port Showing Resistance To Antibiotics

Scientists are beginning to detect antibiotic-resistant bacteria in pork, pigs and some veterinarians, raising the issue of whether these so-called superbugs might find a new route to infect farmworkers or even people who eat pork.

And So It Has Begun...Vaccines to Treat Delayed-Side Effects of Other Vaccines

The U.S. FDA has approved the first vaccine for adult shingles. The vaccine, known as Zostavax, is intended for use in adults age 60 and older. Studies have shown that it can prevent shingles roughly half the time. The market for the vaccine is large, according to spokespeople for Merck, the vaccine’s manufacturer. There are approximately 50 million Americans over age 60 and more than 95 percent had chickenpox as children. The company originally sought approval to sell the vaccine to adults 50 and older, but the FDA restricted it to those 60 and older because it had not been studied in patients younger than 60.
