I know the ancient Athenians used to use just plain Olive Oil.

If anyone should care to test this, I'd be most interested.

Of course, you have to not mind walking around smelling like a Greek salad. ;-)

Herbal Remedies - sunscreen

I'm looking for something too- topical would be just fine as well. Without sunscreen on my face, I get light brown blotches, especially on my upper lip, and the wrinkles do happen faster. Sigh.

It would be wonderful to find something natural.

If i'm around the house, I use coconut oil myself and on my son. It

works great. I've even used it sitting out by a pool for 2 hours and

not a sunburn at all--only thing is if it is semi-hard in a container

it will definately melt in the sun and get all over the place. So if

I put it on at home first I use the coconut-otherwise I take organic

sunscreen to the pool and beach only. My mother uses almond oil and

she doesn't get sunburn either...

I guess its safe to say that the ancient Athenians had an ozone

layer too. Even with my brown skin, I burn now-a-days and I live in

northern CA. SPF 30 is the one product I use on a regular basis that

isnt " natural "

One could infuse the olive oil with lavender buds, jasmine and calendula flowers - smells absolutely DIVINE(!), and the calendula is good for the skin, too. I make it to use as a massage oil, now I have another reason to use it!

--- I use a sunscreen from california baby for me and my baby. It has

titatium dioxide to block the suns rays without using chemicals.

Thats strange...because in my experience and from what I read,

coconut oil tans=burns the skin and it happened to me. :( . I use

organic, unrefined - the same type I use for cooking, eating, etc.

Olive oil works good people on Adriatic sea coast use that today. Last week I used coconut oil. I was first time on the sun for 7 hours at the Lake and I did get just a little bit burn, and great ten. Nobody could believe it is one day ten. Comparing to my husband ho had severe burn because he didn't want to use coconut oil. JasminaCarla <rose.carla wrote: I guess its safe to say that the ancient Athenians had an ozone layer too. Did anyone else see the article about sunscreen being a major cause of

coral reef bleaching? It was on the cnn.com website a couple weeks

ago. I think the original source of the article was in Science or

Nature-a solid, respectable study anyway.

Not that I'm anywhere near a coral reef, but does anyone have any

recipes for sunscreen?

Here's a link to an article about this:

http://www.treehugger.com2008/01/sunscreens_bleaching.php

According to the comments, there may be other factors at work besides sunscreen. Having said that, there's not doubt that traditional sunscreen is not good for either humans OR coral reefs. Here's a link to a supposedly healthier sunscreen:
