BPA tips, green pets, & toxic 'natural' cosmetics

Bisphenol A Tips & Answers Wal-Mart and Toys 'R' Us are phasing it out, and Canada's moving toward a ban. What's it all about? Bisphenol A (BPA), a toxic chemical found in some plastics that's linked to cancer and reproductive problems.

EWG's innovative research has pushed BPA into public view and led to congressional investigations. We'll continue to fight to get it out of canned food, plastic, and baby formula cans.

In the meantime, get more info and tips with our BPA Cheatsheet.

Pets for the Environment: Sign up for a healthy environment for pets

Did you know your pet's food, toys, and bed don't have to be tested for safety?

EWG found 35 toxic chemicals in dogs and 46 in cats - most at even higher levels than we find in people. And pets grow 7 times faster than humans, so what happens to them (like increased cancer rates) might happen to people soon.

That's why Eddie, a dog on a mission, founded Pets for the Environment with the help of Environmental Working Group. Sign up to get pet health tips and updates. Then check out the Wall of Cute and Eddie's Healthy Pet Tips.

Carcinogens in "Natural" Cosmetics Last month, an Organic Consumers Association report stated 40% of "natural" products it tested contained 1,4-dioxane, the same carcinogen EWG found can contaminate 28% of all personal care products. See if your products are on the list, then check out Skin Deep to find a safer alternative.

Enviroblog: Out of the frying pan: Sludge fertilizer as the antidote to lead poisoning? Is the grass greener with sludge fertilizer? For a second there, I thought I was reading The Onion. No such luck.

In separate studies in Baltimore and St. Louis, government-funded researchers spread sludge fertilizer on lawns and vacant lots in poor, black neighborhoods to see whether the fertilizer would inhibit lead poisoning in children. In case you need a refresher (who doesn't now and then), sludge is what's left over at the waste treatment plant -- a semisolid mess made up mostly of human waste. Click to continue.

you'd like us to explore solar and wind energy, conservation, and biofuels

half of you visit our blogs and use social networking sites

And congratulations to Kat in Santa Monica, Thomas in Andover, and Anne in Sacramento, who each won a prize for participating.
