BANG FOR THE BITE

If 10,000 Biters compost 3 lb of kitchen scraps each week, we'll keep the weight of more than 10,000 sanitation workers worth of waste outta landfills every year.

COCKTAIL FACTOID

A cup of soil can hold as many bacteria as there are people on Earth.

How can yesterday's table scraps feed hundreds?

The Bite

Of worms, that is. Easy: Compost your organic waste and use the soil for your garden or houseplants for smiles all around.

The Benefits

Meals, not dumps. A Biter household can keep 500 lb of perfectly biodegradable kitchen and garden waste out of landfills every year (and most stuff doesn't decompose in landfills).

Fine botanical dining. Composting recycles nutrients in your scraps, producing soil that's like a gourmet dinner for your plants.

It's as simple as 1-2-3-flora. New in-kitchen compost gadgets make composting easy and isolate the stink, so your house won't smell like a barn. Some cities even offer curbside bin pickup (à la recycling bins).

Personally Speaking

Jen gives each of her seven chickens turns in the compost heap while she works in her backyard.

Wanna Try?

Just a few of the items you can compost: bread, cereals, and pastas, coffee grounds and filters, eggshells, fruits and veggies, grass clippings, and most teabags.

Check with your garbage company, and see if it offers curbside bins for compost pickup.

EnviroCycle Composter - 5-gal composter for your garage or yard; just give it a spin for easy mixing and aerating ($169).

Worm Chalet - three-tiered worm-based composter; keep it in your kitchen if you collect the fresh compost from its spigot regularly. Also: worms ($159).

Kitchen Compost Crock - nifty, stinkless ceramic pot you can put on your counter or under the sink for collecting compostables until you get around to carting them outdoors ($24).

The Complete Compost Gardening Guide - new, easy-does-it guide, including DIY instructions for making your own compost bins ($14).

Compost Guide - everything you ever wanted to know about composting, and then some.

Compost This - UK site that lets you know what you can and can't compost (aubergine means eggplant, BTW).

The raised compost "tumblers" do a good job. I have the same problems, and a pile is just not going to work. The tumblers are kind of expensive though, so I've put it off. Maybe my "stimulus" rebate will stimulate me to get one this year, lol.

Right now I put all non-meat/veggie only scraps in the yard waste recycling bin. Check Ebay-I saw some SMALL compost tumblers that were not too expensive. I saw them when I was looking for a worm hotel, lol. I might start with a small one too. I would not put any yard clippings in it, since Kail still uses chemicals on the lawn (ugh) but strictly for veggie matter, so I have "clean" compost I can use in my veggie garden.

Someone has invented an under-sink composter, but it's frightfully expensive. Besides, my worms might have to live there, lolol!

My MIL was talking about it. I was hoping she'd say they were getting one - then I'd just get a countertop container and bring our stuff to them! lol But they can't afford it either. Maybe if we go halves on it.. the problem is we're 20-30 mins away, not the BEST solution. But Brian and I are more likely to use the composted material (they are in a community that has landscapers do everything).. hmm we might need to discuss this...

Here's a compost tumbler, that isn't TOO expensive. I like that it's stainless steel:

http://cgi.ebay.com/TUMBLEWEED-COMPOST-TUMBLER-LOW-PRICE-RECOMENDED-BY-NHGC_W0QQitemZ110247765333QQihZ001QQcategoryZ75665QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Another inexpensive one:

I see they sell plans to build your own. I might look around on the internet and see if I can find some free plans, and convince Kail to build me one, lolol. ;-)Cyndi

We leave the yard clippings where they lay in the yard. Sometimes we rake up leaves and what not, but that can go to a pick up site down the street and then is picked up privately I think - I'm not sure what happens to it.

So I'd use it mostly for kitchen-y stuff - FL doesn't have yard recycling and I don't think it'd be good to bring it to the pile down the street (CRITTERS galore). Obviously I could add leaves to it if necessary. I'll check out ebay and talk to my MIL. Its always seemed like something that was beyond my reach - I've watched shows about it and they claim its easy but then they go through a SLEW of details and I get overwhelmed... lol the one she saw included worms but i'm not sure how i'd feel about that... lol

Alot of states have a Resource Recovery Association - here's a link

to Maine's: http://www.mrra.net/ (I just googled ME Resource Recovery

and they came up)

They have a compost bin program for communities/ organizations/ ect.

where you can get them inexpensively. The bad news is that it is an

annual program (I think the ordering deadline is around Earth Day)and

you have to get the bins in lots of 20. But, if you can get 20 people

interested it's a great deal......

There's a few companies that do similar programs with rain barrels

too: http://www.skyjuice.us/ is one that is in MA, NH, & ME

Happy gardening!
