Hi Z'ev,

From the day I learned that mo yao and ru xiang were frankincense and myrrh

I've wondered if and how much cross-pollination there was between mideast

medicine and far east medicine. Reading your post I begin to think there

was a great deal.

I have a couple of questions if you would be so kind. Is the Maimonides you

mention Moses Maimonides? There's an Oriental Studies program at the local

university. Any suggestions for key words or subject headings for a search

on this topic?

TIA, JOE

A great Syrian physician, Rashid Al-Din, many centuries ago wrote a text

called " A Survey of the Sciences of Cathay " that included pulse charts

with both Chinese and Arabic characters, and an overview of Chinese

medicine. There is definitely an interchange of pulse lore between the

two cultures. I have an English translation of Ibn Sina's Canon of

Medicine (one volume), with a large section on the pulse. Quite

interesting. Maimonides (Ibn Musa) was also part of the Tibb-i Unani

tradition, and his works have been extensively translated, including his

pulse work and materia medica.

Yes, it is Moses Maimonides. His works are available in most Jewish

book stores or web lists, mostly translated by Dr. Fred Rosner. Try

Jewish Medicine or Moses Maimonides for key words on a search.

You could try listing them for sale on eBay. That

would put them to good use and maybe put a few dollars

in your pocket. :)

Not sure if it was covered, but you can

donate to women’s shelters and also victim’s units. In San Diego, the DA has a

victimization unit. Some take donations to give to victims of violence or abuse

so they can call 911. They are also looking for parts. leslie
