Advice needed for seeds

Hello :) Thanks for all the great links and whatnot so far - it will

take awhile for me to sort through them all and organize myself, but

Ill get there :)

One thing I know I want to at least try is growing some of my own

food. Now we live in a little townhouse with a tiny plot of lawn so I

cant do that much outside - not to mention we have lots of rabbits

and deer and such that would love to munch on my veggies Im sure.

SO...how do I start growing inside? I was recently given some

organically harvested seeds - tomatos, carrots, snap peas, lettuce,

etc...is there a way to make that work inside at all? Or, is there a

way to keep the critters out of my food without harming them or

making my little plot of lawn into a giant cage? :) Any advice in

this area would be great.

Also - can you recommend a soil mixture that I can get at home depot

or some place (Im near Philly, PA) that way I can grow them

organically? How would I treat them organically as well?

Im so new to this - I dont want to bother anyone, just excited to

start living better :)

Hi Alison,

Not sure yet if you got any answers to your questions, but I'll try to help.

It's hard to grow veggies inside. They just won't get the sun they need. Outside, you'd definitely have to surround the garden with chicken wire to try to keep the critters out.

You might want to google "Earth Box." Ask for them for gifts, lol, since they are expensive. But you can grow veggies outdoors in these boxes. I have one, that I grow lettuce and Chard in. They work really well.

Organic soil-I don't know if you'll find any at HD or Lowes. I have some sort of organic top soil we got at Lowes, but I'm going to use it for my flower beds. I'm not sure if it's recommended for growing food in. I found my organic veggie mix at a small, local garden store. I am using a peat-based mix, since I am growing in raised beds. My husband designed his own "earth box" type of planters, and they wick water up from the bottom, so you need a peat based mix to do this. Regular soil won't accomplish this. So, the soil you'll need depends on if you are going to raise veggies straight in the ground, or in a planter or raised bed of some sort.

The seeds you can definitely start indoors, although it's getting late for tomatoes and peppers. They need to be in the ground soon.

Hope this helps,

Cyndi
