Guest guest
I only have one comment: You shouldn't have listen to your friend. Jewish religion is the one that forbids eating pork and that is their problem. I'm not Jewish and I will always eat pork because I like it and because it is good for me. Jewish people do not live any longer and are not any healthier because they do not eat pork than any other nationality that does. That is good enough for me. Barbara i've GOT to reply to the bacon grease discussion .... !!!! i am more of a quiet lurker .... being german i am a sucker for bacon grease ... back home you can buy it at teh butchers with onions fried into it or apples ... and we use it as breadspread . this said , i have a friend who is a scientist and a christian . and i heard her lecture about the bible / jewish eating laws condemming the eating of pork . she then proceeded to prove from a scientific standpoint WHY eating pork is soo unhealthy . it does serious damamge to your whole body . i love ham , porkchops garlicy porkroast , tenderloin , ribs , BACON , ......prociutto , .... -- but i have been attending a messianic synagogue and been trying really hard to stay away from pork for healthreasons . katies lecture on tke evils of pork in the body keeps ringing in my ears and my kids [ teenagers ] who now refuse to eat pork except for rare occasions . i also wanted to point out that the salt in bacon grease can kill bids ! their body is unable to process the salt . you should not use it for birdfeed . unless its unsalted ! Guest guest
Hi! I just joined the group, but really want to chime in about bacon too. About the health aspects, just check out the Eastern Europeans. They virtually subsisted on pork and didn't have any more problems than anyone else. Read Sally Fallons Nourishing traditions. I heard the only reason she didn't include pork recipes is because the coauthor is Jewish, though I could be wrong on this. On the general topic of fats, saturated for sure is the way to go along with the mono- and poly- (I think, please correct me) unsaturated. Farmland, here in the midwest and maybe in the East and West packages no nitrate bacon for $2.50/12 oz at the super grocery store I go to. It may not be organic, but I can't afford all organic yet. Hope this helps at least a little. Guest guest
I think in the "old days" people were scared off pork for the parasite reasons, but that was a LONG time ago, and pork is a lot healthier than it used to be. Plus I think there were objections to the kinds of things pigs were fed-not the pigs fault. As long as the pork is cooked, it should be fine. Different religions swear off different foods. Nothing wrong with that, but it is all relative... It's much more important to find good quality, organic meat, than to worry about parasites, in my humble opinion. I agree about not feeding bacon fat to birds. I know everyone does it, I just don't think feeding them something so unnatural is good for them. Cyndi In a message dated 4/4/2008 10:18:04 A.M.
