Mar 26, 2008 BANG FOR THE BITE If 10,000 Biters make their own soda at home, we'll keep 6,000,000 aluminum cans outta the waste stream each year. COCKTAIL FACTOID Each year, Americans drink more carbonated soft drinks than juice, sports drinks, coffee, and tea combined. LIKE THIS TIP? Then check out . . .The Root Beer Floats Tip RATE THIS TIP How useful is this tip?(5 is the highest) 1 2 3 4 5 What's more profitable than selling soda? The Bite Not much. Soft drink markups are so high that if we didn't loathe disposable containers so much, we'd probably have a go at creating the next Fanta. 'Til then, we'll make our own soda, sans cans or bottles, thankyouverymuch. The Benefits Liquid-asset raising. A glass of DIY soda can cost just a couple dimes after the initial investment, versus, say, a $1.29 medium Coke at a fast food restaurant. Less container waste. Making soda at home saves transport energy, plus it takes a lotta energy to mine aluminum for cans and produce plastic for bottles (even recycled ones). It's fast and easy. Even faster and easier than making coffee. It can be healthier, since you get to decide what goes into the bevvies (maybe skip the corn syrup in favor of an alternative sweetener). Personally Speaking Even nonsoda-drinkers on the team liked the sparkling water with lemon we whipped up using the Soda-Club gizmo. Wanna Try? Soda-Club Starter Kit - easy-to-use soda maker that comes with reusable bottles; note that soda packets contain Splenda ($80). Mr. Fizz Seltzer Bottle - plug in most CO2 cartridges (available at its site), and get seltzer on the go ($63). Nature's Flavors Syrup Sampler Pack - six flavors of organic syrup for DIY Italian sodas; makes about 16 servings per bottle ($30/6 bottles). Guest guest
Wow, I have a terrible addiction to fizzy stuff, I've been thinking I should get off it because of the packaging and shipping weight. I think I'll get that soda fountain machine. I can have my vice and drink it too. BTW, my favorite summer refresher. Sparkling tea. Drop a bag of your favorite fruit tea into a glass of cold sparkling water. Let it brew 10 to 20 seconds, remove the bag, add ice and enjoy. Aromatic and tasty, no sugar. Guest guest
Soda is terrbile evil horrific stuff. There is nothing good in it for you, and even though there is water the other bad stuff negates it. I used to really love some Pepsi, then I got stuck on Diet Dr. Pepper. But now I have learned that diet soda is actually worse for you and have just given it up. I might have a sip of my boyfriend's root beer once in a blue moon, but just because I need to have a sip of something. I did grow up with a mom who is still addicted to Coca-Cola. Luckily she did really cut back when she was pregnant with me...lol. Now if I could only give up smoking the same way....lol. ~KrisDon't forget to check out my blog at:www.roguedecadence.vox.com & my online store at:www.roguedecadence.etsy.com Never miss a thing. Guest guest
Steaz makes a tea-based soda that's really yummy. It satisfies my cravings for soda. They have root beer, cola, and orange. I get it at my local health food store. Kari
Guest guest
I seem to remember (I'd have to go look it up) that Nourishing Traditions and Wild Fermentations have recipes to make your own "soda." And I think on the Kefir list they talk about making ginger ale, if I remember correctly. If anyone is interested, i can look up and post some recipes. Cyndi In a message dated 3/28/2008 2:14:11 P.M. Guest guest
There's also a fermented tea drink, Kombucha, I think it's called? They talk about that on the Kefir list too, although I don't really pay attention, lol. A lot of people make this too.Cyndi In a message dated 3/29/2008 8:56:44 A.M. Guest guest
Oh, ok, I thought the fermenting process caused a little "fizz." LOL. Cyndi In a message dated 3/30/2008 5:52:45 P.M. It can be flavored with fruit and other things. You can buy it health food stores for $3-5 a bottle. It is not fizzy though.
