Guest guest
She definitely needs an intervention. Do you ever watch Clean House? The things they have to go thru to get people to part with pure CRAP in unbelievable. It always inspires me to get rid of more stuff, lol. I still have a ways to go, but I feel good about the progress I've made. A big problem I have now is all the stuff I have from my mother that is in my garage. I wanted to get the garage cleaned out last fall, but Kail didn't have time to help, so it will have to wait now until after the rain stops. It just needs to be reorganized mostly, it's furniture I want to keep and get in the house. My kids have stuff in there that they want to keep, and my husband has his tools and "stuff" (I'm trying not to use the word crap, lol.) It'll probably not look much better when we are done, but at least I can go thru it all and know that I've gotten rid of stuff we truly don't want. My goal is to get to the point where I don't have one single thing in my house that I don't truly want. Well, it's a goal, anyway, lol. Cyndi In a message dated 2/23/2008 11:27:31 P.M. Guest guest
I know I have inherited that gene from my mother! When she passed away, my brother and I had to clean out TWO storage units. Two of my brothers cleaned out her home, and literally threw everything away, except for some stuff my sister in law managed to save, thinking someone might want it. My problem is I have a "collecting" gene. I'm not sure if that's the same as a hoarding gene, but it's probably pretty close. I have "collections" I hate to part with, but I've compromised by paring them down and not starting any others! Sluggy, how is your brother doing? Any change? Guest guest
That's been around for ages. Everytime I look at it, I shake my head. Whenever I feel back about my house, I just look at that and INSTANTLY feel much better!lolol Some of you will remember my oldest brother (who was sick last year and I went down to help him), he has this hoarding 'illness' too. He had a stroke early in Jan. and has been in a coma since then. I was down there for 3 weeks trying to straighten out finances and things.....one of the things I did was cleaning out his mess of a house and a 30 ft. storage unit. This yrs. trip also involved my other brother in the clean up. After seeing him in action 'helping' to clean and throw out stuff(or NOT throw out stuff) and after talking to his wife/my SIL, I've discovered that the other brother is just as bad a hoarder. He is slowly turning his 3/4 million $ upscale neighborhood home into a storage unit for old uleless crap. So far, his 3 car garage, the apt. over the garage, his home office room and a piece of a hallway is filled to the top and unuseable. My SIL can't stop him & I am afraid that she will leave him eventually over this. It turns out that I am the healthiest one of the bunch!lol At least what I collect is to sell on eBay and get rid of. Guest guest
LOL! I'm not surprised your mom never noticed the missing clothes. Very often, packrats can't part with anything, but then never miss anything that is missing. Because they don't know what they have any more! Yes, I still have my prom dress. I will end giving it to the goodwill one of these days, along with some other 80's clothes. It's only 3 or 4 items, not a whole closetful, lol. If she is a packrat, moving is going to be a total nightmare for you. Good luck with the move! Cyndi In a message dated 2/25/2008 11:31:29 A.M. About 3 years ago I opened that attack, and started throwing stuff down to her...lol. Had a pretty decent yard sale, but 3 giant boxes had to be trashed b/c they got ruined in the attic. I was doing buy one get one free on stuffed animals, and at the end of the day I would take a dollar, give them a garbage bag, and tell them to fill it up (it was all going to be donated, just less for us to take there). I love doing that stuff. Even before that, I cleaned out my mom's closet. She still had clothes she used to party in during the '80's, and that was not cool. Not only are they completely (even now, with the '80's flair back in) out of style, and she will never be that skinny again (heck, I've never been that skinny) and there were just some big old fashion no-nos in there. The closet, a walk in, was packed. JUNKED. Full, and trashed. So I took out all the clothes, and made three piles: yes, maybe, and OH HECK NO. I had a friend take the last to a donation place in the next city over, the maybe went in a pile on the couch in the spare bedroom and was covered with a sheet, the yes went back in, organized. Took her three days to notice the pile in the spare room... but only because she wanted to know what was under her sheet. She didn't notice her closet until I told her, but the day I did it I told her I just organized it for her. To this day she doesn't know about the donated clothes... Sounds mean, but if she doesn't notice the missing stuff... well, it needed to go. This is a woman that would go through clothes I gave her to donate and keep most, throw away the rest. I found boxes full of them when I did this. I would like to be a professional organizer. My plan is to use my mom's home as a model, take before and after pics, get a portfolio started. But with us moving soon, idk. It's still fun, but my mom's house is a lot of work, and I know within a week whatever room I will tackle will be right back to where it was before (happened when I fixed up her laundry room... couldn't see the floor, it was bad. sigh...) ~KrisBarbara <barbara3 wrote: I feel for you.......................... Guest guest
I don't live with her anymore. Couldn't stand it. My boyfriend and I have our own apartment, and will be moving together. We are great at moving, don't have a lot of junk. She has been in the same house since right before I was born, for 29 years. What sucks is that she will buy more.. little things here and there, and doesn't have room. Some pj's on sale, a pair of cute socks (or several), or a nifty whatnot that she thinks is cute. Then there is junk everywhere again. She has clothes in her closet, my old closet, spare bedroom closet, laundry room, one armoire, one large dresser, one not as large dressed, and a coat closet. That doesn't include what is left hanging in both bathrooms and laying around her room... She has a great house, but if she just got rid of a lot of that stuff she doesn't need she could do the repairs on it that it needs. If it was useful stuff, I would not worry about it. But it never is. No one needs 10 pairs of socks with puppies on it.. especially when you already have 20 pairs of other kinds of socks. And I swear I could go "shopping" in her house for misc stuff, and she would also not notice. Ugghh...lol. ~Kriscyndikrall wrote: LOL! I'm not surprised your mom never noticed the missing clothes. ~Kris Delicious ideas to please the pickiest eaters. Watch the video on AOL Living.
