often wonders how we will get around when the

oil runs out. One thing we do see is that

many of the world's best minds are working on

the subject and new ideas are popping up all

the time; we show some below, which may power

us as we visit our National Parks one day.

GO PLAY OUTSIDE: "I like to

play indoors better 'cause that's where all

the electrical outlets are." -that's a quote

from a fifth-grader in an earlier post

and it seems particularly appropriate now. A new study

finds that park visits and applications to

hunt, camp and fish in US National parks have

decreased between 18 and 25 percent in the

last twenty years. The authors

note that in general, people are moving away

from nature everywhere, and into computers

and video games. (they call it videophilia)

"Other research shows that the time

children spend in nature - particularly the

activities we looked at in this study -

determines their environmental awareness as

adults....There seems to be a lot of interest

in the green movement, but it doesn't

translate to being out in the green. That's a

problem at a time when many wilderness areas

are threatened by urban sprawl, highways,

mining, forestry or other developments."

Move Over Peak Oil. Now it's Geek Oil

Aussie geeks and boffins have figured out how

to make gas or diesel fuel from waste paper,

timber and crop wastes."we have every reason

to believe that it's going to be at least

competitive with crude oil, especially with

current prices of crude oil." .

Is that a biodiesel analyser in your pocket?

Yes, it is the new fuel tool that lets

you know what you are putting in your

tank. Sez the prez: "Our handheld

provides a means to overcome a market barrier

to alternative fuels: Poor quality biofuels

that clog up engines." . ::More

New chlorophyll makes power plants

Slice and dice a few cyanobacterium genes

into plants to produce chlorophyll d instead

of the more common "a" and you could get

solar power "factories" that are able to make

and store large amounts of solar energy. ::More

Tip from Planet Green: Save what gas

we have.

New fuels are great, but in the meantime

we should try and sip what we have instead of

wasting it. To really get the most from every

gallon of gas, you can become what's

known as a "hypermiler," a term which is used

even in metric countries because

"hyperkilometerer" does not roll off the tongue.

Hypermilers really go the extra mile

(ha-ha) to make sure their cars get the best

mileage. While some of the steps are a little

much even for us, there's good info to be

gleaned from a hypermiler's best practices.

We offer some of the best at . ::at Planet Green.
