BANG FOR THE BITE

GMO-free and organic produce isn't available everywhere, but this trick helps you know what's what when navigating the veggie aisle.

COCKTAIL FACTOID

Since some people find produce stickers annoying, distributors are experimenting with dyes that permanently tattoo barcodes on fruit.

What's the probability your supermarket plums are genetically modified?

The Bite

Plum dandy (um, pretty high). But we'll help you crunch the numbers: the little stickers on fruits and veggies have digits that let you know whether they're conventionally grown or organic, and if they're genetically modified (GM).

The Benefits

Better odds for your body. GM foods have been in stores only since the 1990s, so we don't know the long-term health risks, and in a 1998 EPA sampling, 29% of the foods tested contained detectable pesticides.

Less of an eco-gamble. Scientists are concerned that GMOs will reduce biodiversity.

Winning the taste-bud lottery. Foodies all over the world agree that the range of possible flavors is greater when we just let Mother Nature do her thing.

Personally Speaking

Those stickers used to annoy us because they're not always easy to peel off, but now we have a newfound appreciation for the little buggers.

Wanna Try?

Look for the labels stuck on your fruits and veggies:

A four-digit number means it's conventionally grown.

A five-digit number beginning with 9 means it's organic.

A five-digit number beginning with 8 means it's GM.

That info is carefully guarded by Big Business and the FDA. They don't want us to know this information, because who would buy their products after that? Unfortunately, it will never be easy to get that information. :-(

I think it's pretty safe to say that if a label does not say certified USDA organic, it will contain GMO crops.

I'm sure you can find information on the FDA website. IF you could find it. They won't allow foods to be labeled non GMO, the most companies can do is label it Certified Organic-IF they can afford to go thru the costs and regs to get their farms certified. I read that it's long, hard, and expensive. The FDA monitors and sends out warning letters to any company advertising Non-GMO products. What would be the point in coding in if it had a GMO in it? All barcodes would have it.

So seeing GMO labels on barcodes of processed foods? Never. Possibly the only reason they have it on fruits and veg is because we import so much. The corn, soy, rice, etc. we grow here in the USA is all GMO now. The FDA would like us to remain as ignorant as possible. Don't forget, they see nothing wrong with GMO foods.

Yes, definitely do not buy any of the processed foods. The problem is that up to 90% of all corn grown in U.S. is genetically modified so even if you buy corn on the cob, it is GM already. Even if you grow it yourself, you can hardly get the clean seed. Monsanto made sure all seed is from them and all seed is GM.
