Guest guest
Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year. TreeHugger looks at peak oil, and how we will get around when it's gone- on wooden bikes? SHELL CEO WARNS ON PEAK OIL :In a rare moment of candor, Jeroen van der Veer, the chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell, acknowledged what many have long considered a forgone conclusion: the end of the oil era is almost upon us, and sooner than you might think. The Oil Drum retrieved an e-mail sent to all Shell employees in which the CEO admitted the obvious: "Regardless of which route we choose, the world's current predicament limits our maneuvering room. We are experiencing a step-change in the growth rate of energy demand due to population growth and economic development, and Shell estimates that after 2015 supplies of easy-to-access oil and gas will no longer keep up with demand." It is rare to hear such candid talk from an energy executive given that the future success of his business is predicated on the longterm availability of oil. His call for more investment in renewable sources of energy sounds prescient though many will likely dispute his assertion that only nuclear power will provide a stable, reliable solution to our energy needs. ::More Wooden Bike? A sixteen year old Canadian kid has built a working bicycle entirely out of wood, including the chain (which caused the most problems and time) and a wooden ratcheting system. ::More Boring Car A very boring looking GM Equinox was honoured as the vehicle that "make the most significant environmental advancements" But will we ever see it on the road? And where does the hydrogen it runs on come from? Sigh. ::More Chicanery Traffic calming is a great idea in residential areas and chicanes are quite common in Europe. Our readers certainly weren't calmed by it, though. ::More Get Recession Ready: Use Your Rebate Money Wisely So the House, Senate, and President have hammered out a deal to print out $150 billion for an economic-stimulus package that will send out cheques for up to $1,200 per family. They want you to go blow it on a plasma TV or -anything-and just shop till it's gone to keep the U.S. economic engine turning over. It would not be the American way to suggest that you save it or pay down some debt, but if you are going to spend it, do it wisely. If you are going to do the right thing and blow it, do it right. Here are some of our suggestions.::More on Planet Green More recession-ready tips at Planet Green!
