What were the biggest bites of 2007?

The Bite

Last year, we tipped topics from wedding gowns to why you should " hold it " on short flights. You nibbled and snacked...and occasionally feasted on a few - here are the Bites you savored most. Drumroll, please...

2007's Biggest Bites

Most Popular Tip: Recycling 101. Recycling can be tricky. You forwarded our bottom-line basics guide, which answered age-old questions like whether you can recycle yogurt cups (you can), more than any other tip. Look for more recycling tips in 2008, including a few about items you never knew you could recycle. Runner-up: Paraben-free makeup.

Most Popular Wanna Try?: Voss water. Something about the Norwegian H2O in stylish glass bottles featured in our safe, reusable water bottle tip really got you clicking. Runner-up: Escama handbags.

Most Controversial Topic: Dairy alternatives. The dairy versus vegan substitutes issue made more noise in the blog and via email than any other tip in 2007 (scroll down on any tip in the Tip Library to see blog comments), prompting one pacifistic Biter to comment, " Go outside or something. " Runner-up: Getting your porn online (surprise, surprise).

Personally Speaking

If all 168,000 Biters give up bottled water in favor of a faucet mount and reusable bottles, in five years we'll save a collective $21,840,000.

What were the biggest bites of April-June?

The Bite

Over the past three months, we've tipped topics from farm sanctuaries to fast-food. Some you considered tattooing onto your forehead, and others brought you this close to having a hissy-fit. Here goes...

The Big Ones

Most Popular Topic: Composting 101. You Biters read and forwarded our tip on making fresh dirt more than any other. Runner-up: the potentially carcinogenic chem Bisphenol-A.

Most Popular Wanna Try?: One Bag website. This expert's guide to packing light was a hit; airlines charging for extra bags...not so much. Runner-up: Thrifty Rogan for Target organic-cotton jeans.

Most Controversial Topic: Reusing condoms. Some of you hated our April Fool's joke; some of you really, really loved it. But most of you blogged or emailed about it. Runner-up: Many were (and we quote) " shocked " that LaraBar didn't make it onto our best energy bars list (alas, for us, LB's more of a snack bar).

Personally Speaking

If all 276,000 Biters compost 3 pounds of kitchen scraps each week, we'll keep the weight of more than 287,040 sanitation workers in waste outta landfills every year.

What were the biggest Bites of July-September?

The BiteOver the past three months, we've tipped topics from beach gear to breastfeeding. Some made you feel like makin' love, and others made you feel like cryin'. Here goes...The Big Ones

Most Popular Topic: Cleaning with vinegar. You Biters (and the friends you forwarded this tip to) got all googly-eyed over our, er, supersexy DIY vinegar cleaners tip. Runner-up: eco pocket guides. Most Popular Wanna Try?: Vinegar Tips. While not the most titillating site we've ever featured, a website packed with ways to use white vinegar proved to be our most-clicked link last quarter. Runner-up: Inexpensive modal duds from Forever 21. Most Controversial Topic: Eco lipstick. Lead in lipstick bugged you (we get that); putting hemp anywhere near your mouth had you wondering (nope, it won't get you high); and it seems like everybody and their Biter mom had a fave brand we "totally missed" in our list. Runner-up: Our take on the ol' water saving, bucket in the shower trick, which caused a Biter mini-uprising in the blog.

Personally SpeakingIf all 380,000 Biters halve the amount of hazardous chems we use, we'll avert the weight of two bulldozers in dangerous waste.

What were the biggest Bites of October-December?

The BiteOver the last 3 months, we've tipped topics from methane power to mineral makeup. Some made you feel like climbing the walls, and others made you feel like tearing them down. Here goes...The Big Ones

The Tip That Got Around: opting out of phone book delivery. You Biters read and forwarded this one more than any other. We don't blame you - those things are heavy, and with Internet listings for everything, who needs 'em? Runner-up: which produce you should buy organic. The Link That Got the Most Love: KEEN recycled rice paper wallet. Besides the obvious phone book link, a place to stash your green that won’t eat up all your green (read: it’s inexpensive) was our most-clicked link. Runner-up: recycled glass tiles from Terra Green. Who knew countertops were so hot? The Topic That Caused a Ruckus: eco-friendly bath towels. Yep, towels, of all things, created a stir - more than a few of you wish we'd talked about the chem-heavy process for turning bamboo into fabric, and what to do with old towels when you're done with 'em (here's a hint). Runner-up: methane energy - especially the idea of hooking up cows to, um, methane-capturing backpacks.

Personally SpeakingIf all 537,000 Biters choose an organic cotton towel instead of a nonorganic one, we'll avert the weight of 291 porcelain claw-foot tubs in synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
