BANG FOR THE BITE

If 10,000 Biters optimize their homes to let in daylight, we'll save a collective $1,980,000 on our annual energy bills.

COCKTAIL FACTOID

Former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall often called court recess around 1 p.m. so that he could catch Days of our Lives.

Why are the days of our lives getting shorter?

The Bite

'Cuz daylight savings ends November 4. After you turn back your clocks this Sunday, make the most of the daylight hours and consider daylighting your home (adding windows), since like sands through the hourglass, so is the money you spend on lighting bills.

The Benefits

Less energy use. Artificial lighting adds up to almost 15% of a home's electricity use. Daylight optimization (including daylighting your home to let in more natural light) lowers this amount.

Lower lighting costs. The less artificial light you pay for, the more money you have for that soap opera-taping TiVo.

Better biorhythms. Just like jet lag, lack of light can make you feel outta sync with the rest of the world, even depressed.

Personally Speaking

Toshio gets up with the sun whether he likes it or not, since he's too lazy to hang curtains on his bedroom windows.

Wanna Try?

Open your curtains and shades during sunny hours, then close them at night for better heat insulation.

Making upgrades to your place? North- and south-facing windows are your best daylighting bet, since they let in lots of even, natural light. East- and west-facing windows provide more daylight mornings and evenings, but cause more glare and don't help with temperature regulation during the hot and cold months.

Daylighting Collaborative - find out how windows can lower your lighting bills.
