Heritage Foods That Grow On Water

Dear Heritage Foods Supporter,

We are proud to offer this week, a collection of foods from the Anishinaabeg Native American tribe of the White Earth Reservation in northwestern, Minnesota.

The land of the Anishinaabeg spans the deciduous forests, prairie and piney north woods which all meet at the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Wild rice is at the heart of the Anishinaabeg tradition and is part of the migration stories and prophecies of its people. Only recently though has ricing been revitalized as a source of income and members of the tribe, young and old, now continue the ancient practice of harvesting rice on canoes around the reservation’s 47 lakes.

White Earth is expanding thanks to the Land Recovery Project, founded by Winona LaDuke, which has purchased back over 1,400 acres of land that once belonged to the Anishinaabeg. Winona is also one of the leading voices in the campaign to protect wild rice against genetic manipulation and the patty industry. Winona educates tribal members on the wisdom and heritage of these precious lands and her vision and hard work help strengthen the Anishinaabeg against inequalities on the reservation

Anishinaabeg Foods Sampler -$69.00 – Shipping IncludedWild Rice is at the center of our selection, but we include other favorites grown and harvested on the White Earth Reservation as well. We add a copy of a local cookbook of traditional recipes and those with a new twist, which call for some of the ingredients below.

Wild Rice (1 lb bag) – 100% hand harvested wild lake rice is processed on site and is especially delicious because it is purely wood parched.

Wild Rice Flour (1 lb bag) – Processed at a local mill and ground into pure, gluten-free flour. Makes wonderful cakes and breads.

Wild Rice Pancake mix (1 lb bag) – A perfect combination of wild rice and white flours make for a delicate and fluffy pancake.

Wild rice cranberry pilaf (1/2 lb bag) – A medley of rice, barley, dried cranberries, celery broth, sea salt and other savory seasonings.

Hominy (1/2 lb bag) – Production flourishes like it once did so many decades ago. Hominy is dried corn that’s been mixed with ash from burning hardwoods. Perfect for stews or sautéed in salt and butter.

North Woods Honey (8 oz jar) – a smooth and natural honey produced in the forests of northern Minnesota.
