Hello Frugalistas,

Welcome to those who signed up from the Consumerist, and Get Rich

slowly and other places, glad to have you. There are more people than you

may realize who are looking for ways to save money (saving is at an all

time low in many, many years) reduce their spending and look for a few

ideas for making use of what they already have.

Frugal for life is primarily from my point of view so you will see those

things that are of interest to me. But there are things you won’t see. I

don’t garden (north facing apartment), I don’t have children and I don’t

own a home. Since those are not written about by myself, I would be more

than happy to give you a platform on which you can voice your frugal

experiences. Just email me and we can get it posted.

Thanks for subscribing and enjoy!

~Dawn C

Hello Frugalistas,

This is a late newsletter as my computer decided to not wake up any longer

and died a quiet death while I busy with other things. I mourn its loss but

am glad I can remove its brain and download it to a CD for further use. If

only we could do that with our own. (Reminds me of the movie Final Cut).

This week was short but interesting, a lot of input from you all on what

has been posted and I love to hear your thoughts!

Take care,

~Dawn C.

HalloThanksMas

Frugalistas!

We are a third of

the way through the mega holiday season

(1/4 if you count New Years) and I just heard my first Xmas song on

Friday. It

is interesting to see how we move from “gimme candy” to

“gimme gifts” with a “quick

thanks” thrown in the middle. Obviously retails stores aren’t

finding the revenue

side of giving thanks, yet. But it is certainly something that should be

larger

in our lives.

On that note, I

would like to thank you all for your kind

words and thoughts, I have found a fulltime job and in speaking up to

others I

have come in contact with, I have my irons in a couple other fires. So a

big

thanks for your support and a heads up as I work my blogging into this

new

schedule. (Friday I didn’t post due to severe tiredness,

sorry.)

However, there are

some good things to read for this week,

from excuses to buy to advertising and watching tv online, plus there are

some

tips for cutting back on paper goods.

Also, I wanted to

get your ideas for polls that I can post

on the right side of the website – right now I’m drain bamaged

from my lack of

sleep and could use some ideas that you would like to see people polled

on.

Thanks.

Thanks for reading

and take care,

Advertising Power - As

much

as I view the abundance of advertising to be overwhelming, there are times

that

you take a look at them and have to admire the effort put in for the

artwork

that they provide.

Landline or Cell Phone -

Based

on the response from the poll, it appears most of you who voted have both.

I'm

curious about those people who only have cell phones or who only have

landlines.

Living on Less –

Grocery Shopping

– The micro-series

ends with grocery shopping.

TV Shows Online for

Free - If

you've recently gotten rid of your TV or want to get rid of your TV, there

is

an alternative - TV online. Unfortunately, the main point for getting rid

of TV

for most people is to free up the time. So this may not be a great idea

for

you.

Excuses To Buy - In the

end

it comes down to the need to slow down, evaluate what is important

Which Comes First?

– I don’t

think this is as hard as the chicken or the egg controversy but chime in

with

your ideas on debt and savings.

Alternatives to Paper

Goods -

Buying paper goods is not something I enjoy doing. I think it is the fact

that

I see so much paper all around me day in and day out that I just hate to

add to

it if I can help it.

Links: Forums Full of

Help - This

week’s links are from forums that I check out every now and again.

There is a

world of help from a community of people. I have highlighted three that I

like.

It is a

Good Day

Frugalistas,

Last Sunday I went

grocery shopping, one of the best tips I

got from my mother was taking a calculator with me. There are two reasons,

one,

to keep myself on budget and two, for figuring out cost per…

whatever. As I

walk around the store and pick up items I enter them into my calculator

and

round up to the next 50¢ when I do (I’d rather be over than

under). This allows

me to stay on budget, not be surprised at the checkout and put back

things

while I am in the grocery area instead of handing them to the checker and

they

become crushed or spoiled.

If a calculator is

too much of a hassle, make sure you make a

list of what you need at least and stick to it. Impulse shopping can

account

for up to 40% of what we toss into the cart. That’s a lot!

Hello

Frugalistas,

Are you still

stuffed from Thanksgiving dinner? I think I

eat only about 1-2 meals a day now because of it and when I do eat; I

chow

down

on the leftover turkey. But a little water on the plate when I microwave

the

turkey and it’s almost as tender as when I first ate it.

Today I am going

to be directing you to a new Frugal for

Life. The blog I formerly ran has been moved now to a new hosting area to

allow

me a little more control. In the meantime the site is still in transition

(so

if you see any broken links, let me know) and I have gone back to the

very

simple look I had when I first started out.

Please surf

around

FFL and check it out, the neat part is

that you can now search the site for issues I may have previously talked

about.

I was even able to get a poll set up on this site as well, so don’t

forget to

vote!

You will still

have access to the old FFL site

(frugalforlife.blogspot.com) but it will not be updated any longer, so

please

update any favorites/ bookmarks or news readers so that you get the most

recent

post.

Good Morning

Frugalistas,

I'm off to do some

last minute holiday shopping for bargains

- not exactly the way I would like to do it, but sometimes you don't get

information on want people want for xmas until the last minute.

Some good things

to read this morning; from living within

your means while being on strike (or any lay off for that matter) to a

review

of a documentary on the credit card industry and even an interesting

article on

a guy who decided to live in the Mall of America for a week. Personally,

I

think he was a bit crazy going into the plan, not just when he finished

it.

I will leave you

with a tip -

If you have sent

out your holiday cards for the year and you

still have some left over - cut the cards up into 2x3 inch rectangles,

punch a

hole in one end and you have yourself unique gift tags for the presents

you

will be giving this holiday.

Hello Frugalistas,

This is a late newsletter, but the information in it is

never too late to read.

I eagerly anticipate the big finish to the holiday season

that is around the corner. This time of the year seems to be the busiest

with

traveling to and fro, going to a party here or there and making sure all

the ‘to

do' items on our lists are checked twice and checked off. Come January

2nd,

I will be ready to get back to a mundane week and figuring out where to go

for

summer vacation.

Until then, take a breather for a few moments and read

through the posts for the week from Frugal for Life and enter the contest.

And

by the way, you can now edit your comments if you misspelled or remembered

something else.

Good morning frugalistas,

I hope this last weekend before all the traveling and gift unwrapping

finds you relaxed. If not, I hope the holiday moves quickly for you so

that

you can relax and beginning the new year with renewed motivation.

For myself, the new year is one of my favorite holiday. It's not about the

drinking or the resolutions or even the ball dropping on time square.

Instead, December 31 to me is like a friday before the weekend, but 100x

as

powerful. I have renewed hope over the things that I want to get

done

for the new year and new ways to do old things. The power of a new

begininng is better than all the caffeine in the world!

On that note, let's get this newsletter started.

Thanks for reading,

~Dawn C.

Forgot to mention - There will be no newsletter next saturday as

I will be taking a majority of the week off, but I will send out the next

super-sized newsletter on January 4.

Re-Gifting In 4 Simple Steps - There are four very

basic things to keep in mind if you are new to the re-gifting process and

last year I ran a poll of how many of you would be re-gifting an item

you received to someone else and out of 86 votes 52% of you said you

would be re-gifting. This year I am running another poll to see if that

has changed or stayed the same.

Amazon

Shipping and Credit Card Balances - Did You Shop For Gifts

Online? Double-Check Your Credit Card Balance as one reader has

learned.

Gevalia

Coffee Maker Program -I get those emails on occasion to try out the

Gevalia coffee maker and

coffee. My coffee maker isn’t heat up very well any longer and I

thought I would give this a try. I have considered this offer but I

wanted to run it by you all and see what you have experienced or

heard.

Junk

Mail Retribution - Don't forget, there are ways to get yourself off of

mailing lists and if that doesn't help, get just a smidge of

revenge.

Topical

Carnivals December 17-18 - Here are the carnivals and festival for the

week

Extending Soda Pop Pennies - On the rare occasion

I buy a 2 litter bottle of soda, I want it to last as long as possible.

What are your thought on ways to extend the life of a bottle of soda

pop?

Uses for

Dryer Sheets - If you are trying new ways to dry clothes and now have

an abundance of dryer sheets, what do you do with them? One reader

suggested emergency tp, which might be better than newspaper.

7

Secrets To Staying Slim, That Save You Money - It is amazing how

healthy living and frugal-living go hand in hand. As one reader commented,

it's all about the " discipline, discipline,

discipline " .

A Look

Back at Week 5 - This week I take a look back at all of the posts that

I wrote during January 16-22, 2005

Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year.

Hello Frugalistas,

I hope your new year has been off to a wonderful start. I have been

working with a friend to get through some of her debt load and we figured

out that she gotten a smidge over 20% paid off last year. It was a moment

of joy for her to see that all that hard work and the little payments here

and there, even with the occasional car issue or work hours cut, that she

can still whittle down the massive burden that she carries. Even though she

is the one doing all the hard work, I am very proud of her.

Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year.

A good Saturday to you all!

This week has been an eye-opening one for me. I generally put off things

until the

weekend when I can focus without distraction, but in the meantime I find

that every

counter top (dresser, kitchen top, bed-side table) seems to acquire all

the

little things I need to get done. A book here that needs a review, papers

that need to be filed or trashed and other assorted notes to myself that

need my attention. I have come to the point that seeing those everyday

wears me out with thoughts that I need to get to them. So, to alleviate

this

annoying anxiety, I have found that putting it all in a drawer or cabinet

(out of sight) will allow me to focus on what I need to do during the

week, then when my weekend comes - I pull it all out and get started on my

to do list. It works for me at least.

I was looking over the posts for this week and found that I seemed to

follow a theme... the limitlessness of the information that is out

there on the web. It is amazing what information you can glean from

asking a question, reading a news article or taking a look at the world

around you with frugal glasses (mine were 22.80- but

that's another story).

Who's never won? Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music.

Hello Frugalistas,

Want to be part of a class action lawsuit and see if you qualify for some

money back on jewelry you have bought in the last 14 years? There was a

lawsuit settlement of $295 million with DeBeers (the diamond

company), who were overcharging on stones, and they now haw to pay back

money to people who have bought mixed gem/diamonds between January 1994 and

March 2006.

There is a handy table (pdf) that has the percentage breakdown on

what you may receive based on the cost of the item you purchased. It is

good to get your receipt in case they ask for it. I called up the store I

bought mine from and they were able to pull the receipt for me again (I

bought mine 12/2004).

There is a chance that the percentage would go down as more people put in

their claims. Another downside is that if your percentage, works out to $10

or less, you would not get a check cut because of the processing/admin

fees. Also, those outside the US would not be included. But here is a good

list of Frequently Asked Questions to go through.

It is a nice little bit of money if it all comes through. If not, nothing

lost.

Good Morning Frugalistas,

I will make this short and sweet so that I can get back to sleeping off

Delicious ideas to please the pickiest eaters. Watch the video on AOL Living.

Good Morning, Afternoon or Evening!

The weather is starting to warm up a bit and I think it is

a good day to start cleaning out the closets and getting rid of items that

I haven't used in a while. The hardest part is deciding weather to sell

something or just give it away. I've always been pretty good at pitching

stuff, much to my room-mates dismay (don't ask her about the many of the

books that 'disappeared'). I put up a poll on the right side of my site to

find out what you do with most of your sorted stuff.

I came across a wonderful quote, for today, hidden away in

my email from another blogger.

“Don’t

waste money, don’t accumulate a lot of

things you really don’t care about. When you are the gift

giver, find out what someone truly wants, even it sounds

dull to you. And if you are the lucky recipient, think long and hard about

what is important to you.”

~Carol (Journey

to Simplicity)

One thing that I noticed when reading through my favorite

book, Tightwad Gazette, that she re-uses A LOT of stuff. My mom does that

as well but then she comes to a crisis point at times where it all just

became clutter. It is a fine line to walk between Frugal

Living and Cluttered Living in my opinion. How do you all decide on a

cut-off point?

One area of clutter can be the coin jars that are

accumulated, although Mary Hunt spoke recently about a man who

bought a truck with all his coins, most of the time we don't have a

purpose for them. You may want to check out your coins a little closer

while watching tv because you never know How much

your coins are worth?

After I have gone through my clutter for today and I decide

that I will sell an item, then I have to decide what I can get for it.

Sadly it is rarely half of what it was bought for. This is a very good

reason to buy second-hand, because most of the time you are good if you

can

get 30-40% of what you paid for it. So much of our stuff is pretty

worthless and yet we are still paying for it on a credit card years later

(with interest!). Essentially it is like a rent-a-center financing with

our

credit cards.

Having credit card debt is like living in a special kind of

hell. But there is A

Snowball in Hell chance that you can get yourself out. It means

cutting

back or cutting out on something and using that money to roll, like a

snowball, into your debts. I tried to explain this in the post, I hope it

is understandable. ;)

Ya know, I think the best thing about cleaning out my

clutter is the opportunity I have to organize my stuff. I now know where

everything is and I can get to it without tripping over something else.

There are a few ways that Organization

can Save Money, if not time, in the long run.

On a completely different topic, the Carnivals and

Festivals are up for this week. If you don't know what one is, it is a

traveling weekly showcase of the best blog articles on a given topic, and

each one covers - Green living, frugality, debt reduction, making it

from scratch and the more general, personal finance.

And finally, if your new year's resolution was to get more

fitness in your life.. how's that going? I'm just starting mine, now that

the weather is better and I was doing some research and reading on whether

I should go to a gym or get it for free. Through all of this, I came

across

some questions to ask myself -Exercise Free or

Gym Membership

Ok, one more:

My Heart Got

Broken Today

“I

first saw

him when I was in college. We met through one of those computer

services and I was told he was generous and the type who would be there

whenever I needed him.

“He was

very

bright and a real card, but my friends warned me he was nothing but

plastic. Nevertheless, we began to go everywhere together … C.C.

bought

me dinners, jewelry, expensive clothes — almost everything I

desired!

“A month later I met Bill, who was waiting for me

when I went to

pick up my mail. He seemed nice at first, but when I asked him what his

interests were he said 21.6% … It was evident that all he was after

was

my money. To make matters worse, Bill said C.C. would never go out with

me again if I didn`t pay — the two had their little trick planned

all

along.”

Have yourself a beautiful weekend!

Take Care,

Hello Frugalistas,

Hello Frugalistas,I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to

you all. I appreciate the time you set aside to read the little posts that

I write, it is always nice to know that there is someone out there is finds

what you do of interest. Thank you as well for all the readers who send

little comments back or tips that they would like included. Thank you to

those who write to me with their questions, I may not know all the answers,

but I have many readers that will pass along their 3¢(inflation) worth to

those who ask. I learn at least one new thing a day, whether if

it is hearing another's perspective that differs from mine, learning a new

tip or just figuring out how to organize my life each day. I

think that is what is so wonderful about all of this, these new

experiences, learned habits and eye-opening moments make for quite a life.

Thank you all for adding more spice to mine! Take care,~Dawn

Hello Frugalistas,Tonight, before you go to bed, set your clock ahead an hour so

that you won't be running late."In the U.S., 2:00 a.m. was

originally chosen as the changeover time because it was practical and

minimized disruption. Most people were at home and this was the time when

the fewest trains were running. It is late enough to minimally affect bars

and restaurants, and it prevents the day from switching to yesterday, which

would be confusing. It is early enough that the entire continental U.S.

switches by daybreak, and the changeover occurs before most early shift

workers and early churchgoers are affected

.. For the U.S. and its territories, Daylight Saving Time is

NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin

Islands, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and Arizona. The

Navajo Nation participates in the Daylight Saving Time policy, even in

Arizona, due to its large size and location in three states."If

you want to read and understand more about

Daylight Saving Time.I have 6 simple posts again this week for

you to enjoy. There is the silver lining of a recession; does gender have

an influence in how we buy (question posed by a reader); ways to save money

in the laundry room and links to cutting corners without sacrifing, plus

more cartoons to laugh or groan at. Enjoy! Thanks for reading and

Hello Frugalistas,It's Saturday again and that means it is

time to send out this newsletter to you all and get your thoughts on the

topics below.I also wanted to get let you all know that in May I

will be taking a vacation from from posting for a good couple of weeks and

am looking for at least 10 people who would like to write in my place. You

are all so quiet and I know with almost 3000 of you reading this, that you

have to have some unique experiences and ideas that other would find of

interest. Writing isn't to hard, it's the grammar that is the most

difficult to master and I have a couple of editors that peruse the posts

and site to catch any (except this newletter). So don't worry about your

spelling/grammar.Write whatever you want from your favorite frugal

tips to thoughts on a local news story or your own ideas. I only

request that what is written stays in keeping with the general idea and

atmosphere of the site. I will need to get these posts in by May 15th, so I

have time to get them ready before I leave. That gives you two months to

think about what you want to write. And if you need any other

incentive - The newsletter is received by almost 3000 people and the site

has over 4000 unique readers a week. Plus your post will be viewable on the

front page for a good 3 days. One way to get your name and blog/site out

there.Ok, now we move on to this week's posts. The most popular post

this week appeared to be 'Tiny Rooms. Tiny Homes.' One way to force

yourself to declutter!Take Care,~Dawn

small quarters? In the comments, one couple is living in a 300 sq. ft

to read about different treasures found in thrift stores (or yard sales)

and thought I would gather a few together over the last year. One Couple’s Philosophy on Dumpster Diving and

Recycling- Speaking of finds, this couple scouts out dumpsters

for great finds on food, furniture and more. Read about their philosophy

and check out their site7 Little Hacks to Saving a Bucket Full- These are just a few of the easiest ways to save a

little money and build up a small bundle of money for either a goal or a

rainy day.Topical Carnivals Week 11- This week's listings

day a year to buy nothing, why not make it a goal for every day (in the

same vein as the Compact

Group)Lessons Learned from the Depression- In

Frugal for Life Week in Review

Hello Frugalistas,

Sorry last week was missed, I was waiting for my month's renewal to kick in for the newsletter service I use. It's all good now.

How was your weekend? I hope it went well, perhaps even relaxing or maybe a learning experience. My weekend was relaxing, a lot of downtime and rest; I guess I'm a homebody, which isn't a bad thing, just think of all the money I am saving by not driving.

Last week I read about depression era recipes, how households were run in 1832, a few tips for searching for a used bike and I even learned a few things along the way. This week, I pulled together a few resources for finding thrift stores, found a couple of site for checking on car warranties, and even revisited the documentary from Frontline about the secrets of credit cards. I hope you enjoy and thank you for reading!

Take care,

~Dawn C.

"Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver."

~Ayn Rand

Depression Era Recipes - Food prices have risen and that got me wondering what kind of recipes are out there that originated from the hard times of the 1930's and 1940's. I thought I would pass along some interesting ones I came across in the book, "Stories and Recipes of the Great Depression of the 1930's".

The American Frugal Housewife -"DEDICATED TO THOSE WHO ARE NOT ASHAMED OF ECONOMY."

This book is a free download and an interesting read from 1832, some things haven't changed that much, others have.

The Lessons that We Learn - Here is a letter to myself about what I have learned, am learning and will continue to learn about.

Carnivals and Festivals for week 14

The links that caught my eye for the week, from traveling in an RV to a vacuum that won't break. (really, that is what they call it!)

Searching for a Good Used Bike - If you are searching for a good used bike to increase your exercise or decrease your driving time, there are few things to consider before plunking down any money.

Listening to Those Who come Before - If you have ever been to the website, Waltonfeed, I would suggest checking it out, some interesting stories and information, you never know what you may read that can be useful.

Dental Health, Used Goods and Browning Meat - Reader Justine passes on some good dental health information and some other links I found of interest.

Car Warranties Adjustments - Recently I got my Crown Victoria fixed because there was a recall on my cruise control. You might want to find out if your vehicle has anything that needs fixing that the manufacturer would be paying for.

Finding Thrift Store Locations - A list of resources for national and regional thrift store chains, including some websites you can check out for a few out of the way locations as well.

Frontline on the History of Credit Cards - A good series of reports from Frontline along with good facts from the website.

Topical Carnivals week 15 - This last week's ‘episode' of carnivals that were hosted around the web.

Hello Frugalistas, I hope your week was enjoyable. We

are a few weeks into spring here in Colorado and we still got some snow

this

last week, not that it stuck around very long (in the lower

elevations). Six posts for this week, from

letters you can write to dispute or verify items on your credit report to

things you can buy that may save you money. Not much else to say;

so onward with the posts.... Dawn C. "It is

good to have money and the things that money can

buy, but it's good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure you

haven't

lost the things that money can't buy." ~George Horace

Lorimer (editor-in-chief of The

Saturday Evening Post from 1899-1937) Letters for

Fixing a

Credit Report - While going through my bankruptcy a good ten years

ago, I

found a great resource for understanding my credit report and how I could

fix

it. I thought this might be helpful for someone else as well. Store Brands vs. Name

Brands - There are two things I take into consideration when in

determining

if I will buy a store brand or a name brand item...Price and Value.

What

a Picture is Worth - Did you know you can carry dozens of eggs on a

motorbike or a even pigs? There are some pictures to see to believe. Also

check

out a fridge that uses no electricity or a photoset of 15 pictures from

the

book, Hungry Planet - in case you haven't seen the book yet. Buying

To Save Money - 10 things that savingadvice.com suggests you can buy

that

will save you money - and my experience, or lack of it, in using them.

Hello Frugalistas,Getting this newsletter out a little

late as I work a bit of overtime at my job to get some extra cash for souvenirs for the upcoming vacation I will be going

on in May. I also wanted to remind you that I am still gathering posts from

any readers who would like to fill in while I'm gone. I've gotten a few

(and I thank you), but I have room for more if you are interested in

writing something pertaining to frugal living or simple living or their

nearest cousins. Just send your submission by either replying to this

email or mail it to frugalforlife. Thanks. Not much else is

going on, I recently caught one episode on tv of "I

Will Make You Thin" that NCN turned me onto and I think the first one

was the best. I am putting the 4 rules into a habit in my life, it is hard

with somethings. The smaller portions isn't as hard as slowing d-o-w-n

while I eat. I have to keep telling myself to put my utensils down... I

think I have lost, I rarely weigh myself, but my clothes are

looser. That's all I can think of to write... Take care,~Dawn

C. "Silver and gold are not the only coin; virtue

too passes current all over the world."~Euripides (480-406

BC) 4 ways to waste

gas money - I received an email recently about ways to save money

on gas and though I have heard of these before I thought I would go through

each one and give my opinion. A few others gave theirs as well, especially

whether you save money filling up in the morning or not.Future

Social Security Estimates - Around my birthday each year I get my

social security estimate for the future, it looks good but it is DEFINITELY

not something I want to count on.Ethylene

Gas, Detergent Caps, Simply Living and Slow Cookers - Some links I

found of interest. I didn't know what ethylene gas was, but it is produced

when fruits and vegetables hang around for too long.US

Dietary Standards, Then and Now - Speaking of food, do you think

government dietary standards have changed much in the last 50 years? It

doesn't appear to have changed.Free Audio

Resources - This was my favorite list of resources to put together.

If you have any to include, pass them on through the comments or email

me.Topical

Carnivals Week 13 - The weekly gathering of posts pertaining to

certain topics.4 Keys to

Accessing Lost Money - Woohoo, I finally found a decent amount of

money! I check every year in all the states I have lived in (CO, IA) and I

never find anything good, this time my name and address popped

up. Comic for the week:
