Guest guest
See what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage. HalloThanksMas Frugalistas! We are a third of the way through the mega holiday season (1/4 if you count New Years) and I just heard my first Xmas song on Friday. It is interesting to see how we move from “gimme candy” to “gimme gifts” with a “quick thanks” thrown in the middle. Obviously retails stores aren’t finding the revenue side of giving thanks, yet. But it is certainly something that should be larger in our lives. On that note, I would like to thank you all for your kind words and thoughts, I have found a fulltime job and in speaking up to others I have come in contact with, I have my irons in a couple other fires. So a big thanks for your support and a heads up as I work my blogging into this new schedule. (Friday I didn’t post due to severe tiredness, sorry.) However, there are some good things to read for this week, from excuses to buy to advertising and watching tv online, plus there are some tips for cutting back on paper goods. Also, I wanted to get your ideas for polls that I can post on the right side of the website – right now I’m drain bamaged from my lack of sleep and could use some ideas that you would like to see people polled on. Thanks. Thanks for reading and take care, ~Dawn C. " The future, according to some scientists, will be exactly like the past, only far more expensive. " ~John Sladek (science fiction writer) Advertising Power - As much as I view the abundance of advertising to be overwhelming, there are times that you take a look at them and have to admire the effort put in for the artwork that they provide. Landline or Cell Phone - Based on the response from the poll, it appears most of you who voted have both. I'm curious about those people who only have cell phones or who only have landlines. Living on Less – Grocery Shopping – The micro-series ends with grocery shopping. TV Shows Online for Free - If you've recently gotten rid of your TV or want to get rid of your TV, there is an alternative - TV online. Unfortunately, the main point for getting rid of TV for most people is to free up the time. So this may not be a great idea for you. Excuses To Buy - In the end it comes down to the need to slow down, evaluate what is important Topical Carnivals Oct. 29-30 – This weeks gathering of posts on debt, frugality, personal finance, DIY and living green. Which Comes First? – I don’t think this is as hard as the chicken or the egg controversy but chime in with your ideas on debt and savings. Alternatives to Paper Goods - Buying paper goods is not something I enjoy doing. I think it is the fact that I see so much paper all around me day in and day out that I just hate to add to it if I can help it. Links: Forums Full of Help - This week’s links are from forums that I check out every now and again. There is a world of help from a community of people. I have highlighted three that I like. Guest guest
See what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage. Good Day Frugalistas, Last Sunday I went grocery shopping, one of the best tips I got from my mother was taking a calculator with me. There are two reasons, one, to keep myself on budget and two, for figuring out cost per… whatever. As I walk around the store and pick up items I enter them into my calculator and round up to the next 50¢ when I do (I’d rather be over than under). This allows me to stay on budget, not be surprised at the checkout and put back things while I am in the grocery area instead of handing them to the checker and they become crushed or spoiled. If a calculator is too much of a hassle, make sure you make a list of what you need at least and stick to it. Impulse shopping can account for up to 40% of what we toss into the cart. That’s a lot! Hello Frugalistas, Are you still stuffed from Thanksgiving dinner? I think I eat only about 1-2 meals a day now because of it and when I do eat; I chow down on the leftover turkey. But a little water on the plate when I microwave the turkey and it’s almost as tender as when I first ate it. Today I am going to be directing you to a new Frugal for Life. The blog I formerly ran has been moved now to a new hosting area to allow me a little more control. In the meantime the site is still in transition (so if you see any broken links, let me know) and I have gone back to the very simple look I had when I first started out. Please surf around FFL and check it out, the neat part is that you can now search the site for issues I may have previously talked about. I was even able to get a poll set up on this site as well, so don’t forget to vote! You will still have access to the old FFL site (frugalforlife.blogspot.com) but it will not be updated any longer, so please update any favorites/ bookmarks or news readers so that you get the most recent post. Since this is a holiday, this will be a quick and simple newsletter for us all. Then back to work on Monday (uck!). Thanks again for reading, ~Dawn C. Good Morning Frugalistas, I'm off to do some last minute holiday shopping for bargains - not exactly the way I would like to do it, but sometimes you don't get information on want people want for xmas until the last minute. Some good things to read this morning; from living within your means while being on strike (or any lay off for that matter) to a review of a documentary on the credit card industry and even an interesting article on a guy who decided to live in the Mall of America for a week. Personally, I think he was a bit crazy going into the plan, not just when he finished it. I will leave you with a tip - If you have sent out your holiday cards for the year and you still have some left over - cut the cards up into 2x3 inch rectangles, punch a hole in one end and you have yourself unique gift tags for the presents you will be giving this holiday. Take care, ~Dawn C. We are what we repeatedly do. ~Aristotle Maxed Out - My review on a documentary that I checked out from the library. The movie covered credit card collectors and the effects of debt on families. Good morning frugalistas, I hope this last weekend before all the traveling and gift unwrapping finds you relaxed. If not, I hope the holiday moves quickly for you so that you can relax and beginning the new year with renewed motivation. For myself, the new year is one of my favorite holiday. It's not about the drinking or the resolutions or even the ball dropping on time square. Instead, December 31 to me is like a friday before the weekend, but 100x as powerful. I have renewed hope over the things that I want to get done for the new year and new ways to do old things. The power of a new begininng is better than all the caffeine in the world! On that note, let's get this newsletter started. Thanks for reading, ~Dawn C. Forgot to mention - There will be no newsletter next saturday as I will be taking a majority of the week off, but I will send out the next super-sized newsletter on January 4. Re-Gifting In 4 Simple Steps - There are four very basic things to keep in mind if you are new to the re-gifting process and last year I ran a poll of how many of you would be re-gifting an item you received to someone else and out of 86 votes 52% of you said you would be re-gifting. This year I am running another poll to see if that has changed or stayed the same. Amazon Shipping and Credit Card Balances - Did You Shop For Gifts Online? Double-Check Your Credit Card Balance as one reader has learned. Gevalia Coffee Maker Program -I get those emails on occasion to try out the Gevalia coffee maker and coffee. Topical Carnivals December 17-18 - Here are the carnivals and festival for the week Extending Soda Pop Pennies - On the rare occasion I buy a 2 litter bottle of soda, I want it to last as long as possible. What are your thought on ways to extend the life of a bottle of soda pop? Uses for Dryer Sheets - If you are trying new ways to dry clothes and now have an abundance of dryer sheets, what do you do with them? One reader suggested emergency tp, which might be better than newspaper. 7 Secrets To Staying Slim, That Save You Money - It is amazing how healthy living and frugal-living go hand in hand. As one reader commented, it's all about the " discipline, discipline, discipline " . A Look Back at Week 5 - This week I take a look back at all of the posts that I wrote during January 16-22, 2005 -- And Simon at debtconsolidationcare.com interviewed me recently, if you would like to take a read through and check out his forum. Guest guest
Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year. Hello Frugalistas, I hope your new year has been off to a wonderful start. I have been working with a friend to get through some of her debt load and we figured out that she gotten a smidge over 20% paid off last year. It was a moment of joy for her to see that all that hard work and the little payments here and there, even with the occasional car issue or work hours cut, that she can still whittle down the massive burden that she carries. Even though she is the one doing all the hard work, I am very proud of her. And if you also have been burning the night oil to lay you debt in a deep grave - I encourage you also to see how far you have come, it is inspiring and can give you a burst of energy for the long haul. Guest guest
Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year. A good Saturday to you all! This week has been an eye-opening one for me. I generally put off things until the weekend when I can focus without distraction, but in the meantime I find that every counter top (dresser, kitchen top, bed-side table) seems to acquire all the little things I need to get done. A book here that needs a review, papers that need to be filed or trashed and other assorted notes to myself that need my attention. I have come to the point that seeing those everyday wears me out with thoughts that I need to get to them. So, to alleviate this annoying anxiety, I have found that putting it all in a drawer or cabinet (out of sight) will allow me to focus on what I need to do during the week, then when my weekend comes - I pull it all out and get started on my to do list. It works for me at least. I was looking over the posts for this week and found that I seemed to follow a theme... the limitlessness of the information that is out there on the web. It is amazing what information you can glean from asking a question, reading a news article or taking a look at the world around you with frugal glasses (mine were 22.80- but that's another story). Take Care, Dawn C. “Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” --Albert Einstein Student Loan Tricks - Reader P.M asks for some tips, tricks or tactics to getting rid of her student loan payments quicker. 5 People have responded, would you agree or disagree with them? Removing Hands Glued to Bedrails - I read this odd news and thought... well at least the mother tried everything suggested by the superglue company. Festival of Frugality Week 108: Quotable Edition - This week I gathered the entries sent in for the festival of frugality - there are some good ones in there. Topical Carnivals 3.08 - These are the other hosted entries on green living, DIY, personal finance and debt reduction To Buy Local or Not - I am slowly understanding the impact of local buying, but transition is slow going. Digital TV Transition for 2.09 - A heads up for those who are concerned about whether they will loose their tv. Linkage for 1.18.08 - This week I enjoyed reading about simple living, self-made millionaires and clothes pegs If you would like to transition over to a feed reader, this is the link that will help you. Guest guest
Who's never won? Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. Hello Frugalistas, Want to be part of a class action lawsuit and see if you qualify for some money back on jewelry you have bought in the last 14 years? There was a lawsuit settlement of $295 million with DeBeers (the diamond company), who were overcharging on stones, and they now haw to pay back money to people who have bought mixed gem/diamonds between January 1994 and March 2006. There is a handy table (pdf) that has the percentage breakdown on what you may receive based on the cost of the item you purchased. It is good to get your receipt in case they ask for it. I called up the store I bought mine from and they were able to pull the receipt for me again (I bought mine 12/2004). There is a chance that the percentage would go down as more people put in their claims. Another downside is that if your percentage, works out to $10 or less, you would not get a check cut because of the processing/admin fees. Also, those outside the US would not be included. But here is a good list of Frequently Asked Questions to go through. It is a nice little bit of money if it all comes through. If not, nothing lost. Thanks for Reading, ~Dawn C. Guest guest
Delicious ideas to please the pickiest eaters. Watch the video on AOL Living. Good Morning, Afternoon or Evening! The weather is starting to warm up a bit and I think it is a good day to start cleaning out the closets and getting rid of items that I haven't used in a while. The hardest part is deciding weather to sell something or just give it away. I've always been pretty good at pitching stuff, much to my room-mates dismay (don't ask her about the many of the books that 'disappeared'). I put up a poll on the right side of my site to find out what you do with most of your sorted stuff. I came across a wonderful quote, for today, hidden away in my email from another blogger. “Don’t waste money, don’t accumulate a lot of things you really don’t care about. When you are the gift giver, find out what someone truly wants, even it sounds dull to you. And if you are the lucky recipient, think long and hard about what is important to you.” ~Carol (Journey to Simplicity) One thing that I noticed when reading through my favorite book, Tightwad Gazette, that she re-uses A LOT of stuff. My mom does that as well but then she comes to a crisis point at times where it all just became clutter. It is a fine line to walk between Frugal Living and Cluttered Living in my opinion. How do you all decide on a cut-off point? One area of clutter can be the coin jars that are accumulated, although Mary Hunt spoke recently about a man who bought a truck with all his coins, most of the time we don't have a purpose for them. You may want to check out your coins a little closer while watching tv because you never know How much your coins are worth? After I have gone through my clutter for today and I decide that I will sell an item, then I have to decide what I can get for it. Sadly it is rarely half of what it was bought for. This is a very good reason to buy second-hand, because most of the time you are good if you can get 30-40% of what you paid for it. So much of our stuff is pretty worthless and yet we are still paying for it on a credit card years later (with interest!). Essentially it is like a rent-a-center financing with our credit cards. Having credit card debt is like living in a special kind of hell. But there is A Snowball in Hell chance that you can get yourself out. It means cutting back or cutting out on something and using that money to roll, like a snowball, into your debts. I tried to explain this in the post, I hope it is understandable. Ya know, I think the best thing about cleaning out my clutter is the opportunity I have to organize my stuff. I now know where everything is and I can get to it without tripping over something else. There are a few ways that Organization can Save Money, if not time, in the long run. On a completely different topic, the Carnivals and Festivals are up for this week. If you don't know what one is, it is a traveling weekly showcase of the best blog articles on a given topic, and each one covers - Green living, frugality, debt reduction, making it from scratch and the more general, personal finance. And finally, if your new year's resolution was to get more fitness in your life.. how's that going? I'm just starting mine, now that the weather is better and I was doing some research and reading on whether I should go to a gym or get it for free. Through all of this, I came across some questions to ask myself -Exercise Free or Gym Membership Ok, one more: My Heart Got Broken Today “I first saw him when I was in college. We met through one of those computer services and I was told he was generous and the type who would be there whenever I needed him. “He was very bright and a real card, but my friends warned me he was nothing but plastic. Nevertheless, we began to go everywhere together … C.C. bought me dinners, jewelry, expensive clothes — almost everything I desired! “A month later I met Bill, who was waiting for me when I went to pick up my mail. He seemed nice at first, but when I asked him what his interests were he said 21.6% … It was evident that all he was after was my money. To make matters worse, Bill said C.C. would never go out with me again if I didn`t pay — the two had their little trick planned all along.” Have yourself a beautiful weekend! Take Care, ~Dawn C. Hello Frugalistas,Tonight, before you go to bed, set your clock ahead an hour so that you won't be running late."In the U.S., 2:00 a.m. was originally chosen as the changeover time because it was practical and minimized disruption. Most people were at home and this was the time when the fewest trains were running. It is late enough to minimally affect bars and restaurants, and it prevents the day from switching to yesterday, which would be confusing. It is early enough that the entire continental U.S. switches by daybreak, and the changeover occurs before most early shift workers and early churchgoers are affected .. For the U.S. and its territories, Daylight Saving Time is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and Arizona. Guest guest
Dawn C <frugalforlife cyndikrall Sat, 12 Apr 2008 2:49 pm Frugal for Life Week in Review Hello Frugalistas, Sorry last week was missed, I was waiting for my month's renewal to kick in for the newsletter service I use. It's all good now. How was your weekend? I hope it went well, perhaps even relaxing or maybe a learning experience. My weekend was relaxing, a lot of downtime and rest; I guess I'm a homebody, which isn't a bad thing, just think of all the money I am saving by not driving. Last week I read about depression era recipes, how households were run in 1832, a few tips for searching for a used bike and I even learned a few things along the way. This week, I pulled together a few resources for finding thrift stores, found a couple of site for checking on car warranties, and even revisited the documentary from Frontline about the secrets of credit cards. I hope you enjoy and thank you for reading! Take care, ~Dawn C. "Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver." ~Ayn Rand Depression Era Recipes - Food prices have risen and that got me wondering what kind of recipes are out there that originated from the hard times of the 1930's and 1940's. I thought I would pass along some interesting ones I came across in the book, "Stories and Recipes of the Great Depression of the 1930's". Hello Frugalistas,Getting this newsletter out a little late as I work a bit of overtime at my job to get some extra cash for souvenirs for the upcoming vacation I will be going on in May. I also wanted to remind you that I am still gathering posts from any readers who would like to fill in while I'm gone. I've gotten a few (and I thank you), but I have room for more if you are interested in writing something pertaining to frugal living or simple living or their nearest cousins. Just send your submission by either replying to this email or mail it to frugalforlife. Thanks. Not much else is going on, I recently caught one episode on tv of "I Will Make You Thin" that NCN turned me onto and I think the first one was the best. I am putting the 4 rules into a habit in my life, it is hard with somethings. The smaller portions isn't as hard as slowing d-o-w-n while I eat. I have to keep telling myself to put my utensils down... I think I have lost, I rarely weigh myself, but my clothes are looser. That's all I can think of to write... Take care,~Dawn C. "Silver and gold are not the only coin; virtue too passes current all over the world."~Euripides (480-406 BC) 4 ways to waste gas money - I received an email recently about ways to save money on gas and though I have heard of these before I thought I would go through each one and give my opinion. A few others gave theirs as well, especially whether you save money filling up in the morning or not.Future Social Security Estimates - Around my birthday each year I get my social security estimate for the future, it looks good but it is DEFINITELY not something I want to count on.Ethylene Gas, Detergent Caps, Simply Living and Slow Cookers - Some links I found of interest. I didn't know what ethylene gas was, but it is produced when fruits and vegetables hang around for too long.US Dietary Standards, Then and Now - Speaking of food, do you think government dietary standards have changed much in the last 50 years? It doesn't appear to have changed.Free Audio Resources - This was my favorite list of resources to put together.
