Hello Frugalistas,

Not much news, a slow week, actually a very very slow week. But then sometimes the boring day to day is a good thing, giving time to reflect and in a small way, enjoy the routine of it all. I hope your week has been that for you as well, a time of reflection and finding enjoyment in the routine.

Here are a few tips for the week:

# If someone has put permanent marker on your scooter car, you would want to try a test area with either wd-40 or fingernail polish remover or both, depending on how long it¡¯s been on there.

# Plain white vinegar is a good substitute for fabric softener. Environmentally safe and non-alergenic, just add ¨ö to ¨ú cup as you would a liquid softener.

# Did you know there is a method to the madness when it comes to the color of the twisty-ties on bread?

Each day has a different color twist tie, they go alphabetically by color. They are:

Monday = Blue

Tuesday = Green

Thursday = Red

Friday = White

Saturday = Yellow

Take Care,

~Dawn Cadwell

No, I think the only way you are going to get energy savings is by purchasing an energy efficient model. But your food will probably taste better, lol.

Good Morning Frugalistas,

The birds are chirping this morning and it looks to be a beautiful day to

get out my scooter and get back into saving some gas money now that it is

going up in price. I thought I would pass along a couple tips on ways to

save gas, in case you forgot.

Only make right turns as you go to the store and work. Of course this

will take planning, but it will be worth every dime… so say the UPS

Walk

or Bike to the store or work. Who cares if there aren’t bike paths,

remember when you were young and you made your own trail by going back and

forth so many times? Be young and adventurous again and cut your own

trail.

If saving gas money isn’t high on your list you may find this small list

of very, very best frugal tips useful.

And speaking of tips, here are this week’s posts in no particular

order:

The battle of the radio ‘gurus’ on finances- personally, I’m 50/50 on

them, I like a few things about both of them. What’s your opinion?

* Clark vs. Dave

Spring cleaning is around the corner, tax refunds are coming in or tax

payments are going out, so now is a good time to start looking through

your house for things to sell to others, pay on the tax bill or just clean

out the clutter. This is how I do it:

* Spring Cleaning, Online Selling

We throw a lot of stuff away. There are mattresses, tables, chairs,

computer monitors, TV sets, you name it; and most of it could be still be

used because all it needs is a good cleaning or a little glue and time to

fix it properly. Do you have any links to add?

* No More Tossing

I have no idea who or what most of these name-brand fashion thingies are

as I'm a jeans and shirt kinda gal, but it was a fun read.

A few tips on saving money in the bathroom, and not just in a coin jar

(ok, bad joke). Included is a tips sent in by a wonderful reader as well.

Good Morning Frugalistas,

The rain is coming down over in my neck of the woods and when I woke up

today I saw a very pregnant robin sitting on the lowest branch of a pine

tree, just hanging out; quite a little life is ahead for that girl. With

spring just a few days behind us, it is the birth of a new life ahead of

us or a more clarified direction. If you have been putting things off;

setting up a budget, cutting up a credit card or two or reducing your

grocery bill, now is just as good a time as any to get that new bud

growing.

This week’s post include:

I ran a couple of polls over the past month and haven't posted the

results, I thought you might get a kick out of what others had to say. One

poll actually came from a post that was made in a forum I read on

occasion.

* Poll Updates

understand that the pursuit of greed is not only unacceptable, but

good idea?

Ok, you despise the library; you can’t stand the children, you only get

mean stares from the librarians and all the sites you want to surf to on

the ‘net at the library are blocked. So what are your alternatives to

getting access to your books?

* Stop Buying Books

Links of interest for the eco-loving and money saving person.

* Eco-Link Love 3.20.07

advice, still useful today.

Natural ways to remove odors or cut down on them; because you don't want

people making faces when they come into your home.

* Odor Remover Tips

Some frugal things that I do that make people wonder if I’ve gone too

far.

* Frugal Madness

I had a bit of an ethical issue come up at work and I want to get your

opinion. Almost 20 people have commented already. What would you do in

this situation?

* Coupons and the ATF

Remember this guy who found the declaration of independence and bought it

for 2.48? Here’s the update:

* Independance goes for $477K

using the curtain and more.

Good Morning Frugalistas,

There is a saying that opposites attract, would that be the case when it

comes to finances? Are you, or your spouse, more frugal when it comes to

the everyday living? I have even seen that couples who are together for a

while, start to ‘meld together’ with the same attitudes towards things,

does that mean you are both frugal or are you both spenders? I’m taking an

unofficial poll on the right side of the site, take a moment to vote while

you are reading, and see how others have responded as well.

This week’s tip: Try to avoid driving during rush hour periods, even when

running errands, because of the stop and go. If you do find yourself in

stop and go traffic, keep a good distance between you and the car in front

so that you can maintain a crawl.

Take care,

~Dawn C.

Laundry Washing Detective

As the title reads, we have an Update from the Gardening Reader, Sheila expresses

her thanks on the help she received landscaping her home.

This week I searched out some answers to common questions related to

washing clothes and for a time became the Laundry Washing Detective. While I was detecting, I

got The Goods on Being Frugal from a friendly spy who

passed by my way. Before we parted, I was handed a set of 5 Keys to Accessing Lost Money that has proven to be

not so beneficial to myself, but may be of use to you or someone you know.

After a long day detecting, I went window shopping and even got off my

feet to test out a few mattresses, you won’t believe what I found; Money in the Mattresses! That was pretty cool. So I

took my ‘find’ to a nearby store and bought a book I have been reading,

and picked up where I left off, Thrift in the Household Chapter 6. Initially when I

opened up the book, I noticed a newspaper clipping that fell out, it’s

title: Whitehouse Thrift – 1925, who knew the Whitehouse

could be so thrifty.

As I walked back home, I recalled the enjoyable time I had early on in the

week at the Carnival-Festival April 23-24, there were some good

things learned from other detectives who spent their time searching out

answers to debt, green living, personal finance and frugality. As I drew

closer to home I came upon a group of kids talking amongst themselves, it

is amazing to hear Kid's Expectations from their parents. I don’t think

I was THAT bad growing up. (wink)

Well, I’m back home to relax and read, I thought I would pass along a few

other odds and ends that I found of interest. In my research on the

computer this week, I found a few sites of interest. You can check them

out at Link Love - Cars, Rent and buying. And finally I

leave you with these Quotes from David Copperfield (book).

Hello Frugalistas,

May is finally here, that means the start of some good weather for a

while, in my opinion. Sunny, warm weather definitely makes me feel

better.

Speaking of sunny weather, reader Elisha wrote to me about a way she and

some roommates saved on lighting, quite creative I think. You can read

about her ideas at Reading by the Light of Solar. Thank you for your

idea Elisha!

This next week will be a light week as I will be on a long needed

vacation. There will be no newsletter next weekend but a large one the

following week (5/19). If you have any ideas or tips you would like to

pass along to readers, I have the platform for you, just email me at

frugalforlife or reply to this newsletter.

Now on to the posts for this week:

I’ll start this off with more reading than you can shake a stick at. This

read.

And you can also check out the other topic specific entries on debt,

personal finance, green living and DIY at the Carnivals for April 30th

There is a bike that has been sitting outside my door, I’m curious what

you think should be done with it? I put my thoughts in the comments, but

wanted to get your opinions on a situation like this… so far it seemed to

be swaying in one direction.

* The Locked, Abandoned Bike

Everyday, it seems, we open our email to find the latest forwarded

sometimes lose money. Are they urban legends or are they real?

* Urban Legends and Finances

Hello Frugalistas,

I heard on the radio that the

Memorial Day weekend is the busiest day, with Labor Day weekend in

2nd place, for people to do fix it jobs around the house that

they have been putting off all winter. So if you wonder why the lines are

long at the hardware store, now you know.

Thank you for taking a break for

your day, or a break from your work day, to read the newsletter. I

don’t have all the answers or solutions to everything, but that is

why I call it “Frugal for Life”, it is an ongoing process that

continues through life.

Since this is a small, personal

newsletter, I want to send a Happy Anniversary to my parents on their

39th wedding

anniversary. Mom and Dad

– I hope no one told you “Don’t sing it!”

Here are the posts that went up for

the week:

*Thrift in the Houshold: ch. 8

*1942 or 2007 Food Poster Information

*Carnival-Festival May 21-22

*Small Portions and Healthy Grocery

*Free Air Conditioning for the Home

*Know your Rights as a Debtor

*Thrift Shopping

Thrift in

the Household: ch. 8

This week’s part of the book

goes over bread-making. One would consider it an essential part of life

(ask the Egyptians or Chinese). The question is, “Do you think it is

worth it to make your own?”

1942 or

2007 Food Poster Information

History tells us many things and

some of the best tips can be found from the past in poster size. More to

come next week!

Carnival-Festival May 21-22

This week’s round-up of

blogger’s posts on green living, debt reduction, personal finance,

do-it-yourself and frugality.

Small

Portions and Healthy Grocery lists

Two

years ago I wrote about how smaller portions can save you

money and extend

your food supply. It seems that some food chains across the US are also

realizing that they can do the same.

Yucky Samples

Do you ever get a yucky sample and

thanked heaven that you didn’t pay for it? I have.

Free Air

Conditioning for the Home

Did you know there is free A/C

out there? Here’s my way to make the best use of it.

Know your

Rights as a Debtor

Just because you owe someone money doesn’t mean that they can

walk all over you, call you endlessly, and make life a pain in the bum.

There are some things to keep in mind as you try to organize yourself to

pay off your debts.

Thrift

Shopping

This will be an addition to later

carnival round-up, but for now. Check it out on its own.

I reflect on my clutter every day! LOL. I did get some work done on Friday, yay! Still so much to clear out...

CyndiSee what's free at AOL.com.

Hello Frugalistas,

This weekend I decided to take off

for my birthday (no congratulations needed). It is a rare time now when I

have two days off in a row when I’m not working one of two jobs, the

FFL site is a hobby.

This year’s birthday caused me

to sit back and reflect on clutter that is in my life. There are days I

just go from 4 am until midnight and crash into bed getting up at 4 am

again. I enjoy what I do, so that does make it easier. But, in the process

of taking care of daily life, I have lost myself.

It has been a long time since

I’ve sat in a quiet room and just listened to the silence and let my

thoughts go. It has been a while since I have been to places that make

me smile from ear to ear (not counting laughing at work). My life has

become so cluttered with the day to day, I’ve gotten buried in it

and I need to start finding myself again in the mess. That is what this

weekend is for. And the first item of business is to clean up the clutter

on all the flat surfaces of my home.

I think what got me to realize this

was a recent (free) organizing

library

that Ariane put together for her Neat Living website/blog. As I was

reading through it, I realized that if I’m not better organized with

my stuff and things to do, I become secondary to it. If time is set aside

to organize, have time for myself and put things in order, than that

calmness will show to others. So, thank you Ariane for

giving me inspiration.

Thank you for letting me ramble

on.

Take care,

Dawn C.

Hello Frugalistas!

How is your June coming along? It is

slowly getting warmer here in Colorado. My goal for this summer is to keep

the A/C off for as long as possible. So far that isn’t hard as the

weather has been pretty cool. My goal is to get to August without turning

on the A/C. (fingers crossed)

For something fun, Savingadvice.com

has a quick 10

question quiz to see how much money you can save on your

energy bill. The first time I took this, about two years ago, I saved

450.00; this last time I saved 550.00 (of a possible perfect score of

2,000.00). Take the quiz and see how you do.

Utility tip for the

week: To find if there are air

leaks in your house, place a lighted candle or incense stick near doors

and windows, then watch the smoke. Repairing leaks will greatly reduce

your energy bill since heating and cooling units become overworked when

these leaks are present.

Good Afternoon

Frugalistas~

Today was the first day I got

a chance to go to the farmer’s market and pick up from fresh green

beans, potatoes, corn, etc.

I really went to two, the first one

we drove around for 20 minutes looking for it, and we did find a big huge

sign that said JULY-OCTOBER. Oops. We moved on to the other one we knew

existed and got what we needed and then some. Good thing we went with a

cash limit or we would have come home with many impulse buys. If you want

to find the ones nearest your area go to this map to see where and

when.

Hello

Frugalistas,

This next week will be the

4th of July. For me, it is extra money in my paycheck. This is

a good time to sit down and figure out where that money is put to best

use. There are quite a few options that the money can be used for. Debts

would be the first choice unless you are building up an emergency fund.

Then there are the emergencies that may already exist, like fixing up a

car or home. Ultimately, the best decision is to make a plan for the money

so it doesn’t slip through your hand before you know

it.

This week’s tip: With Summer upon us, the wind blowing and

construction under way, don't forget to dust off light bulbs and

fixtures to improve light output. Dust building can reduce light up to 50%

less.

Hello Frugalistas,

Today is 7-7-7 and considered a

lucky day. Exactly what the origins of why 7 is considered a lucky number,

in our culture, elude me; but if you want to know all about the number 7…. I always liked 4 as a lucky number.

I hope your mid-week holiday went

well. It was nice to have fewer people on the roads as I traveled to work.

This should be a regular holiday thing, it would be nice. I had my own

Hello Frugalistas,

This is an abbreviated newsletter as

it has been a busy week. This last week we have moved furniture for new

carpeting (landlord provided, yeah!) and being thankful that I don’t

have more stuff to move, making trips to doctors and hospitals to be

supportive, and finally I have started the process of updating the

website.

Check out the website, let me know

if you see anything out of whack and I will see how to fix it. For those

who had trouble with the red bar on the right side, that is now gone.

I’m still going to tweak a few things, but the general look will

stay the same.

Something that I have learned this

week is how much control we have over our health and whether our future

will be one with many doctor visits or few. Of course there are the

situations that can’t be controlled, but preventative care, like

regular checkup and eating healthy, can do wonders to keep us out of the

greater dangers in the future.

Take care,

~Dawn C.

Hello Frugalistas,

Another day starts with sunshine and bird chirping. When I was

younger, those birds made such a racket; I despised listening to their

chirping. Grumble, grumble. As I get older, I

definitely appreciate the short time they have to voice their approval or

disproval, before they get busy with the day. One nice thing about growing

older, the veneer of what others think are important starts to chip off and

instead I am left with a new look, my own look on things that I appreciate

much more.

And to something completely different, I have a new poll on the

right side column where you can voice your approval or disproval of the

SnapShot boxes that popup when you roll over links. You will decide

whether they stay or go. As for last week’s poll, the background

color of the site will stay blue, as over 60% who voted liked the blue

better than white or grey.

This week’s posts are varied from a cartoon’s opinion

on yard sales to places you can sign up for free stuff on your birthday,

from the warning signs of out of control debt to uses for phone books. And

there is the continued series on the book ‘Thrift in the

Household’ and a way to enter a contest to win

money.

I keep you waiting no more.

Take care,

Hello Frugalistas,

This week I finally finish the c.1918 book “Thrift in the

Household”, it only took 5 months to review, but it’s finally

done. If you want to review all the chapters, this last chapter has link

you can go to that will give you all 17 chapters to review. I initially

reviewed the book because I thought it had some good advice no matter

which generation read it, it just need an itty-bitty amount of tweaking

for the 21st century.

This week I also go over my experience in the most recent focus

group. To sum it up in one word, Fun! And the cash didn’t hurt

either.

Hello Frugalistas,

Saturday has come and before I went to work I ran some errands

and did some ‘drive-by’ Garage-saling. (More on that later

this week) It is amazing how you can find things you didn’t know you

needed at garage sales. I picked up some VHS movies that I will probably

end up recording onto dvds, as the 12 year old vcr probably won’t

last much longer. I also picked up enough printer paper to last me into

2009. I only had a little cash and the garage sales

weren’t planned, which isn’t always the best way to do things.

I

passed up the 1960’s erector set and the antique typewriter, as it

was outside my price range, but it was cool to see them. Then again,

I’m the type of person that could spend hours at the Brass Armadillo antique mall. But all told, I spent less than $10 for

paper, videos, photo albums and books.

Hello

Frugalistas,

I hear the sounds of lined

paper rustling against folders and pencils clattering together. I see the

youthful, carefree smiles have given away to moody, dour faces. And yet,

many adults seem to have picked up a spring in their step. I do

believe school is around the corner.

One of the best ways I learned

about money was through my parents giving me a budget for the semester

(half year). It was nice to buy what I thought was popular and yet still

learn how to budget my money and save some it for things other than

clothes. I think I was 13 when my parents started that. Just an idea if

you tussling over what to buy and wear.

I also want to take a moment

to thank you all for reading and giving feedback. It is nice to know there

are others out there that have similar lifestyles and philosophies.

Hello Frugalistas,

Thank you so much to signing up for the newsletter. Every

week I will give a quick summary of what has been posted over at the

Frugal for

Life site. You s that appeal to you or file the

newsletter

away as a resource for later. And of course if you ever get to the stage

where

this is not the life for you, you can at any time by clicking

the

link at the bottom of this email. Of course, I would much

rather

have you around (you just never know what might appeal to you.)

Stephanie from the couponmom.com, wrote to tell us about an update to

her

site.

" I wanted to let you know we've added weekly deals lists for

Wal-Mart and

Target, and these are very popular. Many free deals there. We also have

lists

for CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid as well. These national lists are the most

popular

ones! "

So if you haven't checked it out recently, it is a great resource and you

don't

have to pay a monthly amount. If you want to read more - Coupon Mom Vs. Grocery Game

I don’t have any affiliation with her, I just really

like

the site and it’s free as well.

Can you believe the holiday seasons are around the corner?

I

have a few items that I have picked up over the course of the year, but

nothing

like I should. However, this year is going better than last year. And

isn’t

that what it is about, baby steps towards the goals we have for ourselves

whether it is living on less, buying less, reducing debt or increasing

savings.

Take care,

~Dawn C.

" I make my own holiday gifts, actually. I have a

whole area of my backyard where I planted lavender because I love it. It

really

helps me sleep because the oils from it help calm me down. I cut down the

flowers, dry them and then put them in little silk satchels. I usually

make my

gifts in the holistic approach and send to family and friends.

We also play tennis at the community tennis courts, rather than a

private

tennis club, and I swim laps at the community pool. "

Utilizing Plastic Cups

-Inspired by Debbie's question and my previous

post,

I answer Deb’s question via video. So besides recycling, what else

can you do

with a plastic cup?

Purging Excess - Today,

our office was

presented an empty box to play with. Just kidding! Actually we were given

liquid creamer instead of powdered creamer; the amount of joy around the

office

was like watching a little kid play with an empty box.

The reason I bring this up is because I want to talk about little steps

and how

they can be the most important.

Extreme Advertising -

When is there too much

advertising in your life? Perhaps a better question is, “Will we

know if there

is too much advertising in our life?”

DIY links of Interest -

It's

a do-it-yourself kind of day. I like to see the creativity and the

passion

people have to make something work for them or try something

new.

Topical Carnivals - Sept.

- From the Hartford, CT newspaper, Courant and Mr. HandyPerson,

comes this bit of advice on giving your clothes pins a long and happy,

wooden

Top of the Blogs - There are a number

of

sites that have listed their top 10-100. This is actually a great way to

find

new websites, if by name only.

The reason I am posting these specific ones is because they listed this

blog

and I want to pass along a HUGE grin and thank you for thinking of

me.

Saving Pennies In The

Kitchen

- This may look little and insignificant to a newbie, but many will tell

you

that the little stuff does add up.

Hello Frugalistas,

A short review this week, then you

can get back to your projects around the house, labor day bbq and sports

games.

If you don’t automatically get

the next few months of holidays off, they will bring in extra pay. Since

most paychecks are similar each pay cycle, the extra money you do get

would be best applied to a savings account or paying down debt. Even if it

is only an extra 40-50 more, that is extra money you don’t normally

get and can apply to a credit card minimum, bringing your emergency

savings up a bit more or going toward the holiday season for gifts.

Speaking of the holiday seasons, I

have a few tips for getting through the nearest one (Halloween) and making
