Guest guest
See what's free at AOL.com. Good Morning Frugalistas, There is a saying that opposites attract, would that be the case when it comes to finances? Are you, or your spouse, more frugal when it comes to the everyday living? I have even seen that couples who are together for a while, start to ‘meld together’ with the same attitudes towards things, does that mean you are both frugal or are you both spenders? I’m taking an unofficial poll on the right side of the site, take a moment to vote while you are reading, and see how others have responded as well. This week’s tip: Try to avoid driving during rush hour periods, even when running errands, because of the stop and go. If you do find yourself in stop and go traffic, keep a good distance between you and the car in front so that you can maintain a crawl. Take care, ~Dawn C. This week’s posts: Quote: David Copperfield (book) The Goods on Being Frugal 5 Keys to Accessing Lost Money Link Love - Cars, Rent and buying Thrift in the Household Chapter 6 Carnival-Festival April 23-24 Update from Gardening Reader Kid's Expectations Whitehouse Thrift – 1925 Money in the Mattresses Laundry Washing Detective As the title reads, we have an Update from the Gardening Reader, Sheila expresses her thanks on the help she received landscaping her home. This week I searched out some answers to common questions related to washing clothes and for a time became the Laundry Washing Detective. While I was detecting, I got The Goods on Being Frugal from a friendly spy who passed by my way. Before we parted, I was handed a set of 5 Keys to Accessing Lost Money that has proven to be not so beneficial to myself, but may be of use to you or someone you know. After a long day detecting, I went window shopping and even got off my feet to test out a few mattresses, you won’t believe what I found; Money in the Mattresses! That was pretty cool. So I took my ‘find’ to a nearby store and bought a book I have been reading, and picked up where I left off, Thrift in the Household Chapter 6. Initially when I opened up the book, I noticed a newspaper clipping that fell out, it’s title: Whitehouse Thrift – 1925, who knew the Whitehouse could be so thrifty. As I walked back home, I recalled the enjoyable time I had early on in the week at the Carnival-Festival April 23-24, there were some good things learned from other detectives who spent their time searching out answers to debt, green living, personal finance and frugality. As I drew closer to home I came upon a group of kids talking amongst themselves, it is amazing to hear Kid's Expectations from their parents. I don’t think I was THAT bad growing up. (wink) Well, I’m back home to relax and read, I thought I would pass along a few other odds and ends that I found of interest. In my research on the computer this week, I found a few sites of interest. You can check them out at Link Love - Cars, Rent and buying. Hello Frugalistas, I heard on the radio that the Memorial Day weekend is the busiest day, with Labor Day weekend in 2nd place, for people to do fix it jobs around the house that they have been putting off all winter. So if you wonder why the lines are long at the hardware store, now you know. Thank you for taking a break for your day, or a break from your work day, to read the newsletter. I don’t have all the answers or solutions to everything, but that is why I call it “Frugal for Life”, it is an ongoing process that continues through life. Since this is a small, personal newsletter, I want to send a Happy Anniversary to my parents on their 39th wedding anniversary. It seems that some food chains across the US are also realizing that they can do the same. Yucky Samples Do you ever get a yucky sample and thanked heaven that you didn’t pay for it? I have. There are some things to keep in mind as you try to organize yourself to pay off your debts. Thrift Shopping This will be an addition to later carnival round-up, but for now. Check it out on its own. Guest guest
I reflect on my clutter every day! LOL. I did get some work done on Friday, yay! Still so much to clear out... CyndiSee what's free at AOL.com. Hello Frugalistas, This weekend I decided to take off for my birthday (no congratulations needed). It is a rare time now when I have two days off in a row when I’m not working one of two jobs, the FFL site is a hobby. This year’s birthday caused me to sit back and reflect on clutter that is in my life. There are days I just go from 4 am until midnight and crash into bed getting up at 4 am again. I enjoy what I do, so that does make it easier. But, in the process of taking care of daily life, I have lost myself. It has been a long time since I’ve sat in a quiet room and just listened to the silence and let my thoughts go. It has been a while since I have been to places that make me smile from ear to ear (not counting laughing at work). My life has become so cluttered with the day to day, I’ve gotten buried in it and I need to start finding myself again in the mess. That is what this weekend is for. And the first item of business is to clean up the clutter on all the flat surfaces of my home. I think what got me to realize this was a recent (free) organizing library that Ariane put together for her Neat Living website/blog. As I was reading through it, I realized that if I’m not better organized with my stuff and things to do, I become secondary to it. If time is set aside to organize, have time for myself and put things in order, than that calmness will show to others. So, thank you Ariane for giving me inspiration. Thank you for letting me ramble on. Take care, Dawn C. Guest guest
See what's free at AOL.com. Hello Frugalistas! How is your June coming along? It is slowly getting warmer here in Colorado. My goal for this summer is to keep the A/C off for as long as possible. So far that isn’t hard as the weather has been pretty cool. My goal is to get to August without turning on the A/C. (fingers crossed) For something fun, Savingadvice.com has a quick 10 question quiz to see how much money you can save on your energy bill. The first time I took this, about two years ago, I saved 450.00; this last time I saved 550.00 (of a possible perfect score of 2,000.00). Take the quiz and see how you do. Utility tip for the week: To find if there are air leaks in your house, place a lighted candle or incense stick near doors and windows, then watch the smoke. Repairing leaks will greatly reduce your energy bill since heating and cooling units become overworked when these leaks are present. Topical Carnivals June 4-5 This week's rides o' fun on the various topics; In case you don’t know what a carnival is: A carnival is a blog version of a topical magazine. Good Afternoon Frugalistas~ Today was the first day I got a chance to go to the farmer’s market and pick up from fresh green beans, potatoes, corn, etc. I really went to two, the first one we drove around for 20 minutes looking for it, and we did find a big huge sign that said JULY-OCTOBER. Oops. We moved on to the other one we knew existed and got what we needed and then some. Good thing we went with a cash limit or we would have come home with many impulse buys. Guest guest
See what's free at AOL.com. Hello Frugalistas, This next week will be the 4th of July. For me, it is extra money in my paycheck. This is a good time to sit down and figure out where that money is put to best use. There are quite a few options that the money can be used for. Debts would be the first choice unless you are building up an emergency fund. Then there are the emergencies that may already exist, like fixing up a car or home. Ultimately, the best decision is to make a plan for the money so it doesn’t slip through your hand before you know it. Guest guest
See what's free at AOL.com. Hello Frugalistas, Today is 7-7-7 and considered a lucky day. Exactly what the origins of why 7 is considered a lucky number, in our culture, elude me; but if you want to know all about the number 7…. I always liked 4 as a lucky number. I hope your mid-week holiday went well. It was nice to have fewer people on the roads as I traveled to work. This should be a regular holiday thing, it would be nice. This last week we have moved furniture for new carpeting (landlord provided, yeah!) and being thankful that I don’t have more stuff to move, making trips to doctors and hospitals to be supportive, and finally I have started the process of updating the website. Check out the website, let me know if you see anything out of whack and I will see how to fix it. For those who had trouble with the red bar on the right side, that is now gone. I’m still going to tweak a few things, but the general look will stay the same. Something that I have learned this week is how much control we have over our health and whether our future will be one with many doctor visits or few. Of course there are the situations that can’t be controlled, but preventative care, like regular checkup and eating healthy, can do wonders to keep us out of the greater dangers in the future. Guest guest
Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL.com. Hello Frugalistas, Another day starts with sunshine and bird chirping. When I was younger, those birds made such a racket; I despised listening to their chirping. Grumble, grumble. As I get older, I definitely appreciate the short time they have to voice their approval or disproval, before they get busy with the day. One nice thing about growing older, the veneer of what others think are important starts to chip off and instead I am left with a new look, my own look on things that I appreciate much more. And to something completely different, I have a new poll on the right side column where you can voice your approval or disproval of the SnapShot boxes that popup when you roll over links. You will decide whether they stay or go. As for last week’s poll, the background color of the site will stay blue, as over 60% who voted liked the blue better than white or grey. This week’s posts are varied from a cartoon’s opinion on yard sales to places you can sign up for free stuff on your birthday, from the warning signs of out of control debt to uses for phone books. Hello Frugalistas, Saturday has come and before I went to work I ran some errands and did some ‘drive-by’ Garage-saling. (More on that later this week) It is amazing how you can find things you didn’t know you needed at garage sales. I picked up some VHS movies that I will probably end up recording onto dvds, as the 12 year old vcr probably won’t last much longer. I also picked up enough printer paper to last me into 2009. I only had a little cash and the garage sales weren’t planned, which isn’t always the best way to do things. I passed up the 1960’s erector set and the antique typewriter, as it was outside my price range, but it was cool to see them. Then again, I’m the type of person that could spend hours at the Brass Armadillo antique mall. But all told, I spent less than $10 for paper, videos, photo albums and books. Hello Frugalistas, I hear the sounds of lined paper rustling against folders and pencils clattering together. I see the youthful, carefree smiles have given away to moody, dour faces. And yet, many adults seem to have picked up a spring in their step. I do believe school is around the corner. One of the best ways I learned about money was through my parents giving me a budget for the semester (half year). It was nice to buy what I thought was popular and yet still learn how to budget my money and save some it for things other than clothes. I think I was 13 when my parents started that. Just an idea if you tussling over what to buy and wear. I also want to take a moment to thank you all for reading and giving feedback. The game will last as long as I can find odd items. If you have any items around your house, snap a picture and I can post it. There are no prizes, just the fun of guessing. Frugal Ways to Put Color On Your Walls Having white walls or blank walls may keep your home simple and if that is the direction you want to go than more power to you. Guest guest
See what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage. Hello Frugalistas, Thank you so much to signing up for the newsletter. Every week I will give a quick summary of what has been posted over at the Frugal for Life site. You s that appeal to you or file the newsletter away as a resource for later. And of course if you ever get to the stage where this is not the life for you, you can at any time by clicking the link at the bottom of this email. Of course, I would much rather have you around (you just never know what might appeal to you.) Stephanie from the couponmom.com, wrote to tell us about an update to her site. " I wanted to let you know we've added weekly deals lists for Wal-Mart and Target, and these are very popular. Many free deals there. We also have lists for CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid as well. These national lists are the most popular ones! " So if you haven't checked it out recently, it is a great resource and you don't have to pay a monthly amount. If you want to read more - Coupon Mom Vs. Grocery Game I don’t have any affiliation with her, I just really like the site and it’s free as well. Can you believe the holiday seasons are around the corner? I have a few items that I have picked up over the course of the year, but nothing like I should. However, this year is going better than last year. And isn’t that what it is about, baby steps towards the goals we have for ourselves whether it is living on less, buying less, reducing debt or increasing savings. Take care, ~Dawn C. " I make my own holiday gifts, actually. I have a whole area of my backyard where I planted lavender because I love it. It really helps me sleep because the oils from it help calm me down. I cut down the flowers, dry them and then put them in little silk satchels. I usually make my gifts in the holistic approach and send to family and friends. We also play tennis at the community tennis courts, rather than a private tennis club, and I swim laps at the community pool. " ~Emme (model, clothing designer and author)From Interview Utilizing Plastic Cups -Inspired by Debbie's question and my previous post, I answer Deb’s question via video. So besides recycling, what else can you do with a plastic cup? Purging Excess - Today, our office was presented an empty box to play with. Just kidding! Actually we were given liquid creamer instead of powdered creamer; the amount of joy around the office was like watching a little kid play with an empty box. The reason I bring this up is because I want to talk about little steps and how they can be the most important. Extreme Advertising - When is there too much advertising in your life? Perhaps a better question is, “Will we know if there is too much advertising in our life?” DIY links of Interest - It's a do-it-yourself kind of day. I like to see the creativity and the passion people have to make something work for them or try something new. Topical Carnivals - Sept. 3-4 - All hosts did an excellent job this week putting the carnivals (and festival) together. Bravo! Here is my reading material for the week..... Repair of Wooden Clothespins - From the Hartford, CT newspaper, Courant and Mr. HandyPerson, comes this bit of advice on giving your clothes pins a long and happy, wooden life. Top of the Blogs - There are a number of sites that have listed their top 10-100. This is actually a great way to find new websites, if by name only. The reason I am posting these specific ones is because they listed this blog and I want to pass along a HUGE grin and thank you for thinking of me. Saving Pennies In The Kitchen - This may look little and insignificant to a newbie, but many will tell you that the little stuff does add up. Pinching Pennies Outdoors - This is a short and incomplete list, so what are some ways you save money outside? Penny Pinching in the Bathroom – Continuing the series of saving pennies throughout the home, outside and inside. I'm Frugal Subversive! - Pat, the Grand Dame of frugal-living, and the person I originally found online when I first started 'frugalling' has tagged me with the frugal subversive award. Hello Frugalistas, A short review this week, then you can get back to your projects around the house, labor day bbq and sports games. If you don’t automatically get the next few months of holidays off, they will bring in extra pay. Since most paychecks are similar each pay cycle, the extra money you do get would be best applied to a savings account or paying down debt. Even if it is only an extra 40-50 more, that is extra money you don’t normally get and can apply to a credit card minimum, bringing your emergency savings up a bit more or going toward the holiday season for gifts. Speaking of the holiday seasons, I have a few tips for getting through the nearest one (Halloween) and making a brand new start in de-cluttering, living below your means and measuring your success with frugal living. Thanks for reading, ~Dawn C. Too Many Books If you are in a de-clutter mood and have gone through your book shelves and don’t know what do you with your books. Here are a few ideas for giving away or making money. Tips and Links for the Holidays It is always good to think ahead and since the stores have already pulled out their Halloween candy and costumes, we need a some ideas for saving money. Topical Carnivals 8/27-28 This is what is going on for various topics in the wide world of blogs Walking to Health and Savings Walking is the most frugal way to get exercise. A side benefit is the money saved in health costs from the exercise and money saved by leaving the car at home. Bankruptcy, Cash and Me The process of claiming bankruptcy was eye-opening and frightening. Alternative to 1.29 water An alternative to getting bottled watered- more for the money!
